After a brilliant performance against West Brom on the 23rd we travel to South Yorkshire to face bottom of the league Rotherham to hopefully continue to win enough points to get in among the playoff pack

Our football results this week have been like waiting for a bus, you wait for ages then 3 turn up together, following the 2nd half collapse at home to Hull City when we were comfortably winning 1-0 (if you can be comfortable at one nil up that is) then shot ourselves in the foot with a crazy 10 minute spell we end up losing the game 2-1. We then travelled to South Wales, again with a depleted team & came away with a 2-1 win, 3 days later we progressed to our 1st cup semi final for 20 years on Tuesday when comfortably beating Port Vale 3-0 & capped off a tremendous 7 days with a magnificent performance at home to West Brom, when all things considered, the best display of the season for me, which not only moved us up 3 places but now, 3 points separate us from 5th & 6th place teams, with one point separating the Boro & 7th place, the Championship is such a tight league, considering our injury list its nothing short of miraculous that we have done so well with so many 1st team players missing

A magnificent team effort for every individual player v West Brom for our final Saturday fixture of the year with Barlasar having his best game in a Boro shirt v West Brom, right from the off he was beating a couple of men then playing the ball off, his through ball to Engel for the goal was quality,  he was sort of running the show against a team I thought would overpower & out battle us in midfield, but far from it, hopefully he kicks on from here
VDB, gets better each week, 19 years of age playing, out of position, in a foreign county, what a player he's turning in to
Engels game is far better for me than Giles, not so much when putting the ball in the box but far, far better defensively, I would think that Engel won't be far behind Giles on assists come the end of the season
Johnny Howson, if the West Brom commentator is correct will start, if selected, his 299th Boro game
Fry, Glover, Rogers, Silvera, excelled also, Jones for me, is important in a big part of our defensive play. Dijksteel had his best game for along, long time. Greenwood with his constant running & pressing, unsettling defenders played a big part in West Broms poor form on saturday

It was nice to see McGree & Coburn make cameo appearances on Saturday, especially McGree who is such an important player for us & sort of proved his case when he came on & his little nippy footwork almost set us up for another goal we could have scored

Listening to Michael Carrick on the BBC Tees podcast after the West Brom game you could feel how excited he was with that performance, as opposed to how flat he was after the Hull defeat
After doubting him & the recruitment team following the first 6 fixtures that seen us sit bottom of the league when the team build was in its early stages he's slowly getting us playing to how we did last season, controlling the game, keeping the ball, whereas last season, we had some big players to finish off our excellent moves, this season we have our own young players who are finding their feet in the Championship & in time, will come good

The Rotherham fixture, our penultimate game of the year, is a completely different scenario from the past 7/8 fixtures, in the fact, the teams we've faced have been, top two, down to top half the table opposition, Rotherham are the opposite, rooted to the foot of the table, 9 points from safety, only 2 home wins this season & minus 27 goals, without a win since the back end of October when they beat Coventry 3-0, big win, so its in them to create an upset

Not saying it's going to be any easier than those games mentioned, I would think Michael Carrick will send out his team in the right frame of mind but one thing I'll expect from Rotherham, they'll put up more of a fight than West Brom did

The 1st Rotherham v Boro fixture was played on the 4th September 1954, Boro losing 3-0 with 2 Boro players making their final appearances on that day, William Watkin, moving to Mansfield Town in June & Joseph Rayment moving to Hartlepool United in July, both in 1955

Boxing days game will be the 22nd game in South Yorkshire between Rotherham & Boro, with the following:

Won - 13
Drew - 1
Lost - 7
For - 36
Against - 27

No away hat tricks

3rd April 1956 - Albert Mitchell outside right who made 56 appearances for the Boro, scoring 6 goals made his final appearance in a 2-1 defeat at Rotherham, before moving to Southport in August, with Billy Day scoring out 1st Boro goal away to Rotherham

Dan Barlasar signed from Rotherham in January 2023 for an undisclosed fee

Managed both teams

Neil Warnock - Done a similar job to what he later did at the Boro. "good old Neil" came in with Rotherham 3rd bottom, not only beating the Boro but secured safety for Rotherham, with an amazing 9 points to spare, two clubs he managed to keep in the Championship, but what do you expect from the bloke who has proven to be the best Championship manager ever

That would worry the rest of the teams around us, depleted Boro still continue to challenge the playoff pack, what will happen with a full strenth team

erimus74

We've enjoyed 3 x 4-1 wins there & a couple of 3-0 wins yet I would happily settle for a 1-0 win, just to keep ticking along, the group we're among will start to fall away as the months tick by, maybe the 4 play offs will be contested by 6, 7 teams, lets make sure we're one of them

erimus74

If we're successful today we'll climb a few places with West Brom home to Norwich & Hull home to Sunderland, meaning points dropped

Blott

Brilliant write up.

We are going up.

Leeds got beat at Preson, who climb to 7th, one thing I dispice in todays game when it showed the Leeds keeper getting sent off, the pathetic Preston player rolling around when the Leeds keeper put his hand on his face, he should be disciplined, for me that is the only reason VAR should be used in our game, nothing more

erimus74

But it'll never happen because its more important a goal is disallowed because the scoring playets tie nail was infront of the defenders toenail yet a player can cheat to gain an advantage & its ok

Maybe its politcal, cheating is a labourite, toe nail a tory 😉🤣

Mainly one way traffic but frustrating in the final third from us

Can see Coburn & McGree introduced earlyv2nd half for Greenwood /Silvera & Rogers, even though Greenwood could have had 2 we seem to fall down when hes on the ball

Still rather have Engel than Bangura mind

Redcar Belgrade

Fairly turgid stuff against a team with absolutely no ambition whatsoever. Hopeful we can nick a goal but 0-0 is a distinct possibility against these spoilers.
