Following last weekends controversial defeat at Leeds, our 3rd defeat in the last 12 league games, we find ourselves at home to the surprise team of the season, one defeat in the last 5 games, with a couple of former Boro players getting good reviews in their team

Boro sit in 12th place, still only 3 points off a play off place, 18 points behind our opponents who sit in 2nd place, with a whole cluster of clubs in between who will have their sights on breaking in to the top 6 each week, its so close, in fact, if we had drawn on Saturday, that extra point would have moved us up to 7th in the table, best league in the world

Possibly, considering the players available & the opposition this could be the hardest game of the season, mind I thought that v Leicester & Leeds, the latter disappointed because up to the game I thought we'd be lucky to get a point, in the end we undeservedly got beat & didn't make Leeds really work for any of their goals, so maybe another typical backs against the wall Boro & a comfortable 3-0 win, you just never know with the Boro

Though trying to pick the team for Saturday will be as hard as predicting this weekends lottery numbers

25th August 1954 1st home fixture - Boro 0 v Ipswich Town 1

Boro v Palace fixture will be 34th fixture on Teesside between the 2 teams with the following record:

Won  - 15
Drew - 9
Lost  - 9
Goals scored - 57
Goals against - 37

7th September 1974 Boo 3 Ipswich Town 0 - Our 1st ever top flight win over the tractor boys

2nd May 1981 - Title chasing Ipswich came to Ayresome Park for a 1st division clash, 4 points behind Aston Villa with 2 games to go, our final home game, with Ipswich leading 1-0 at half time & Aston Villa losing at Arsenal, the title race was back in the on
2nd half, Bosco Jankovic changed all that, 2 goals later to secure John Neals penultimate home game with his final win as manager & Bosco's final Boro goals, the league was won by Aston Villa, even though they suffered a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal
There were chants at Highbury from Villa fans "we love you Boro" & a rumour that a number of Villa fans voted Bosco as their player of the year

September 1992 - The first ever PL season Boro & Ipswich Town were drawing 2-2 with 90 minutes on the clock & attacking the holgate end a player was fouled in the Ipswich penalty arae, the ref instantly pointed to the spot, our 1st ever PL penalty
Gary Parkinson was first to pick up the ball when Bernie snatched it out of his hands & with wanting to become the first Boro player to score from the spot in the PL walked a few steps back, everyone held their breath, Bernie ran up & placed the ball over the bar & in to the general hospital, Parky must have said, serves you right Slaven, I would have scored
20 odd years later at a Gary Parkinson benefit night, Bernie took to the mic & apologized to Gary for not only pinching the ball out of his grasp, but ballooning the ball in to orbit

Home debuts v Ipswich Town

6/12/1958 D.Fernie lost 3-2
27/11/1976 Stan Cummins lost 2-0
1/9/1992 Barry Horne drew 2-2 - 16th loaned player & 1st sub keeper, replacing injured Ian Ironside in the 55th minute - Loaned from Millwall
7/8/2010 Kevin Thomson, Kris Byod, Nicky Bailey & Tarmo Kink lost 3-1

Home penalties v Ipswich Town

3/4/1961  Bill Harris become the 36th different penalty goalscorer when he scored our 132 home penalty in a 3-1 win
16/12/1967 John Hickton became the 43rd different penalty goalscorer when he scored our 151st in a 2-1 win
29/12/2018 Jordon Hughill became the 90th different penalty goalscorer when he scored our 259th penalty

No home hat tricks goalscorers v Ipswich Town
Maybe Saturday will be the 1st, fingers crossed

Represented Boro & Ipswich Town

Tony Mowbray - who actually scored his final Boro goal at home to Ipswich Town
Grant Leadbitter - Class signing by Mogga, quality leader & penalty taker
Kevin Beattie - 5 games for us, never lost when he started a game & scored our last ever FAC penalty at Ayresome Park when he netted a spot kick v Notts County in January 1983
Sam Morsey - Didn't really see the best of him here, aggressive little midfielder who was often in trouble with refs, remember he got pelters OTR with comments of the worst player ever etc, but he's proving those wrong, maybe we were the wrong club for him, sorry to see him go
Alun Armstrong - Good striker for us, scored some crucial goals, suffered badly with a bad injury
Phil Whelan - We signed him before the deadline, or so we thought, meant he had to sit out the remainder of the season
Trevor Putney - Always liked him & glad when Rioch brought him here in the summer of 89, hard, aggressive player who gave everything on the pitch, suffered a horrendous injury in the ZDS northern final v Aston Villa with Gordon Cowens, part of the transfer that brought Willie Falconer to us with Putney going to Watford
Mick McNeil - Young England U23 & called up to the full England team when he was sold to Ipswich.Between 1958/1964 he played 178 games, scoring 3 goals, signed for Ipswich in 1964
John O'Rourke - Give us a goal JO'R was excellent striker for us, especially in 66 alongside John Hickton, in total he scored 42 goals in 72 appearance, left us for Ipswich in 68 when he scored 30 goals in 69 games, lethal striker at both clubs
Mark Brennan - Stylish player who we bought from Ipswich Town in the summer of 88 after winning promotion to the top flight under Rioch, stylish player who had flashes of what we bought him for but overall flattered to deceive
John Wark - I didn't really rate him much here, excellent player throughout his career but not for me, 2 goals in his only season, though in a more defensive role, when Lennie arrived he made it clear every player had to live within a certain radius of Ayresome Park, John Wark couldn't upsticks & move so after just one season, he went back to Ipswich
Matty Bates - Decent playerr for us but to injury prone to establish himself, loaned out to Ipswich in 2006 where he played two games
Kieran Dyer - Signed a short contract till the end of the season, then Mogga decided he wasn't what we needed & after playing 9 games, scoring two goals he was released
Markus Bent - 41st loaned player - Loaned from Birmingham City - Strachans 1st loan signing - 19th at the Riverside, 8 games, 4 as sub, no goals
Luongo - On the clubs books season 22/23 but never featured

We've got a poor record against these

But we need a win and we have home advantage

Hoping for a decent crowd and a good atmosphere to cheer the lads on to three points

Boro 0 Ipswich 3

Its going to be tough, we'll miss the energy of Jones
Look at the players along with Jones that are unavailable, we've been cursed this season with injuries & when you think first team regulars too

Smith
McGree
Hackney
Fry
O'Brien
McNair
Forss
Lenihan

This hasnt been a game, or two we've had a group of players missing for about 6, 7 weeks now & when you take into account the big players we lost at the end of the season then what Carrick & the team have acheived is quite remarkable

Tomorrow's game is what my dad use to preach to me growing up, he would tell me, "Never back the Boro & never back against them"

Saying that, of all the players we have missing Hackney not available v Stoke hit us the hardest, I have a feeling we'll miss Jones's energy tomorrow, especially his defensive duties

C'mon Boro!

Just got home, really disappointed, I can take us losing, its part & parcel of the game, you win some, you lose some, but what I cant accept & fans wont is the likes of Rogers, heartless pile of so & so, Greenwood, who I didnt notice till after 25 minutes, 2 even though inexperienced gave the ball away so cheaply, Crooks was awful to, but for me hes been a big part of our good performances, so I will give him a break

How long can we just accept slow tempo, lethargic football, it was awful & I would say the worst we've played under Carrick

If the team suddenly become full strength then Rogers & Greenwood cant seriously be 1st choice

Thought Clarke, Howson, Engle played well, others not so, with the pair Ive mentioned awful, heartless & totally inept

I know I maybe a bit OTT, but thats me, Im buzzing for days when we win & as low as a snakes belly when we lose

Im not calling for Carrick & hope whatever happens with this weakened team Carrick is the one to take us forward
