Sir Bruce Rioch once said, never check the league tables till after 10 games, well its now 10 games & we look way off promotion challengers

Well, what can we say, another poor performance on Saturday

Bristol City were as bad as we've seen from any opposing team that's came to the Riverside this season, they had no outlet just clearing the ball, Boro pressed & pressed & as per this season missed gilt edged chances, which we had a few, some really good chances to open the scoring but again, as what's happened time & time & time again this season, we failed so miserably in front of goal.

We started on the front foot with a couple of shots across the goal, Azaz could/should have hit the target, ELL could/should have hit the target, those go in & after 15/20 minutes its game over & how many can we score

Bristol City were desperately trying to keep the Boro out, it just seemed a matter of time before we hit the back of the net, but again, our usual inept display in front of goal brought the same pattern that has dogged us throughout the season, we miss opportunities, we then start to drop back, concede possession & what's happened time & this season we concede with our defence at sea, our confidence drops, Carrick makes changes to late, we don't pick up the tempo & the game just fizzles out in to a nonevent, consisting of a defeat, repeat & rinse

We seem to be wasting more time passing between Dieng & the back players than the opposition players who 'feign' injury

Sheffield United, who occupy 4th place on 19 points lost their unbeaten record in their previous game 2-0 away to Leeds  are up next, with our ex-boss Wilder in the dugout, they didn't look to go at Elland road but you can bet you bottom dollar they won't be as poor against us. Boro sitting in 9th place 4 points off a top 6 slot

We can blame Carrick, we can say we're blame missing Dank's, but neither of those two are responsible for Azaz missing chances against Watford & not hitting the target on Saturday, or ELL, who I really like, missing chances this season, no a big part of our loss is down with the players on the field

Part of Michael Carrick's management which I don't understand, he kept faith with Edmundson when he deputised for our player of the season Clarke when he was fit to start games yet dropped both Gilbert & Dijksteel who both gave MOTM performances, bringing back Azaz & Ayling

Big changes needed on Wednesday night, Dijksteel, Clarke, McGree, Conway should return, Gilbert not sure how far away he is to full fitness, but when he's available he's in for Azaz's, Michael Carrick has to let players know they have to fight for their place

This will be the 57th game between both teams on Teesside, with our first ever Boro v Sheff Utd fixture on the 17th October 1891 in a 3-1 home defeat

Home fixtures

Won - 31
Drew - 12
Lost - 13
Goals scored - 109
Goals against – 61

One match that stands out for me was played during our darkest ever period

18th March 1986 – With Boro heading for the dreaded drop & following the sad dismissal of Willie Maddren the board turned to first team coach (not manager back then) Bruce Rioch to step in as temporary manager until they could find a suitable replacement. Bruce immediately accepted & up to the Sheff Utd fixture had been in charge for 3 games (win, loss & draw)
The home evening match against Sheff Utd ended in a 2-1 defeat with Don O'Riordan scoring our consolation goal, which didn't tell half the story, not only did the Boro batter United that night but, the team walked off the field to a standing ovation & the board were so impressed with how the team performed that Bruce was offered the job full time later that night, which he accepted. Boro were magnificent on the night
This was to be Gary Rowell's final appearance in a Boro shirt & a home debut for Colin Cooper, who was named as sub & replaced Gary Gill in the second half for his second Boro appearance.

We need the special one for Wednesday night, another Mark Viduka he tortured Sheff Utd in a cup match at the Riverside a few years back

I'm still recovering from that abject display on Saturday. Lethargic, poor tactically and wrong substitutions at the wrong times. Carrick needs to quickly find a Plan B during a game.

Sheff Utd are flying and I can't see anything but the result below -

Boro 6 Sheff Utd 1

1-0 Boro

Too Much Perspective

Watching that lot against Leeds the other day, they look bang average.
Glad it's a night game - feels like a long time since we've had one at the Riverside. Get a different 'big match' vibe going and it might give the front line a bit of swagger and focus minds at the back. I think we'll get points from this.

Agree Sheff Utd looked bang average but Bristol City looked even worse,as bad as any team to visit us this season, its not the opposition thats our issue its our inept forwards

Be brave Carrick, make at least 4 changes, grab the bull by the horns & show the Boro faithful that you're not happy with individual performances & the 'big' squad is not only there for injuries /suspensions but players out of form

It's Bang average teams are beating us.I knew we weren't automatic promotion candidates, now I'm doubtful about the playoff's.

Unless he addresses our weakness at both ends then I agree, we have no chance of the playoffs

More hope than expectation..... 2-0 to the Mighty Boro

 :champs:

tunstall

hopefully Sheff Utd will do us a favour and score an own goal....

we need a change up front

Conway in for ELL (pinning our hopes on him was foolish and hasn't worked - he's not good enough)

play our best defenders

a change in goal wouldn't go amiss either

Boro 1 Them 1
