We took our time didn't we!
But we, not only recorded our first home league win of 2024 when beating Norwich, we then followed up that win with a good performance & win at QPR for our first back-to-back league wins since December 23rd

Our opponents Birmingham City sit in 21st in the Championship with a minus 15 GD, one point & one place above third bottom Huddersfield Town, with Mark Venus, ex No2 at the Boro during Moggas reign, is as he did for one game at the Boro, standing in for Mogga due Tony Mowbrays illness & again we wish him all the best in the world

Confidence must be high within the group at present I expect Michael Carrick will keep the same starting 11 from the past two games, though if he were to make one change from the starting 11 with possibly ELL making way for Silvera, only for the fact after such a long layoff he's played 3 games on the bounce in quick succession

I think we'll win this game tonight with a 2-0 win, our first 3 games winning run since the end of October, which shows how inconsistent we have become & collecting more away points than home

Have we turned the corner after those two wins?

6th January 1900 - 1s fixture away to Small Heath, then Birmingham, Boro losing 5-1

This will be our 55th fixture at Birmingham with the following record
Won - 11
Drew - 16
Lost - 27
Goals scored - 62
Goals against - 100

No hat tricks v Birmingham

Debuts/final appearances v Birmingham

26/12/1905 - Thomas Coxon made his final appearance before moving to Burslem Port lost 7-0Vale in May 1906.
15/10/1927 - John Peacock made his debut after moving from Everton in Ma lost 3-2
29/10/1932 - Robert Baxter made his debut after moving from Mussleburgh Bruntonians in May 193 won 4-1
29th March 1937 - Bryan Raymond made his debut 0-0
26/9/1967 - Michael Kear made his debut after moving from Nottm Forest this month lost 6-1
26/9/1967 - Rob Worthington made his debut after moving from Halifax Town in August 1966. Desmond McPartland made his final appearance before moving to Carlisle United in December lost 6-1
19th April 1969 - David Mills made his debut lost 3-1
22nd August 1978 - Mark Proctor made his debut won 3-1
19th December 1987 - Mark Burke after arriving from Aston Villa drew 0-0

3 away penalties v Birmingham

23/1/1904 – Joe Beckett[/u] became the 5th different Boro penalty goalscorer when he netted our 6th away spot kick in a 2-2 draw in Coventry, before the moved to St Andrew
18/12/1984 – Dave Currie became our 52nd different penalty goalscorer when he netted our 85th away penalty in a 3-2 defeat
7/10/1986 – Brian Laws became our 56th different penalty goalscorer when he netted our 86th away penalty in a 3-2 league cup defeat

A few players who have represented both teams

Bruce Rioch who managed the Boro so successfully had short loan playing spell at Birmingham playing 3 games in 1978, that must have gone down well been an ex-Villa player
Colin Todd another one of the Rioch dream team played for Birmingham between 1979 -1982
Terry Cooper played for the Boro between 1975 - 78 & managed Birmingham 1991 - 1993
Brian 'Taffy' Orritt played for Birmingham between 1956-62 then came to the Boro in 1962 becoming our 1st ever substitute
George Smith played 82 games for the Boro between 1968-71, signed for Birmingham in 1971
Steve Vickers played for the Boro between 1993 - 2001, Boro loaned Steve to Birmingham in 2001 who then after 5 games made the move permanent till 2003
Tony Mowbray who is presently on sick leave has managed both teams
Mark Venus has been a No2 & temp manager at both clubs
George Friend seemed forever at the Boro, between 2012 - 2020 George who was signed by Mogga played 290 games, scoring 10 goals, a fantastic servant
Adam Clayton, between 2014 - 2020 played 241 games, scoring one goal
Marcus Bent 41st loaned player - Loaned from Birmigham City - Strachans 1st loan signing - 19th at the Riverside – 7 games, zero goals

26/12/1906 – Birmingham Director Harry Morris identified a site for a new ground in Bordesley Green, some three-quarters of a mile from Muntz Street towards the city centre. the stadium was constructed in under twelve months from land clearance to opening ceremony on boxing day 1906. Heavy snow nearly prevented the opening with volunteers asked to help clear pitch & terraces before the match, a goalless draw against the Boro could go ahead, the match ball is displayed in the cabinet at St Andrews ground
Similar to when Ayresome Park was to be built, the ground is reputed to have been cursed by gypsies evicted from the site; although gypsies are known to have camped nearby, there is no contemporary evidence for their eviction by the club.

When Birmingham, previously known as Small Heath, were our 1st ever football league opponents on Teesside when we played at Linthorpe road ground, prior to Ayresome Park, on that particular day, 9th September 1899, we lost 3-1, with Michael Murphy credited with scoring our 1st ever 'home' league goal
Xmas day 1905 at Ayresome park was the 1st time we played against them when they changed their name from Small Heath to Birmingham, with Alf Common scoring the only goal of the game

When John Hickton scored away to Birmingham City on the 17th August 1974, the opening day of the season, it was our first top flight goal for 20 years, we went on to win 3-0

We've never beaten Birmingham in a cup match, nor had a player score a hat trick past them, 1st one tonight?
We have done the double over Birmingham City 6 times, 1907-08, 1974-75, 1978-79, 2005-06, 2017-18 & 2018-19

tunstall

Hopefully he'll play Balaser and Greenwood

John Trebor

Some great stuff as always in there Erimus.
I had to laugh at the 'Kid Craig on Boro star trek' article.

Big Jack's account of Craig Johnston's trial period is very different to Craig's own version!

1 - 2.

Top thread as usual.

Sift through the bile, they are pining for you OTR.

And our council will fart about with bins and charge you more for the privilege. Not an original idea among them.

Gingerpig

We seem to be picking up . they are struggling minus Mogga, can see a 0-2 coming along ...then the hope kicks in again , though we are not good enough to win play offs sadly

Johnny Thunder

Class once again Erimus.

2-1.

Though for me, Finch should have been on the bench instead of Gilbert or Greenwood

Bud Wiser

Line-up as expected. Lets just hope we don't give the opposition a 30 minute head start this time!
