3 defeats on the bounce followed 2 away wins & progress in to the semi-finals of the league cup, even one of the biggest & richest teams in the world, cough, cough, up the road, failed to do that & a 2-legged league cup tie to one of our rivals in football, Chelsea
And to reach the semi finals with 11 senior players unavailable, over a long period, not just a couple of games, through injury is a big boost for the club

But back to the championship, leading up to our fixture at Swansea, along with the 3 consecutive defeats on the bounce we were suffering an horrendous injury list, which is still growing by the game, with 2 inexperienced teenagers & an inexperienced 20 year old named on the bench, to say we were thin on the ground is an understatement, yet through all that, the mighty Boro didn't feel sorry for themselves one bit, coming through all that with a massive win, though at times we rode our luck but like many other games this season we seem to have been penalized for mistakes we were making, against Swansea the football gods were looking down on us & with 2 well executed goals recorded 3 valuable points to keep our hopes of fighting for a playoff spot alive

Sitting in 13th place we have kept ourselves within touching distance, West Brom who sit in 5th place are 6 points ahead of the mighty Boro, if we can keep plugging away & when/if our bigger players return next year then we'll be in a great position & can hopefully, fingers crossed, push on for a place in the top 6, mind along with 10 other teams chasing 4 places, but to keep in touch we need to avoid defeat against West Brom on Saturday, a big task considering the senior players that could be unavailable, we know we have a full eleven missing from the game, its who will play is the big question

23rd March 1901 Linthorpe road – FAC 4th round the 1st fixture between the two team on Teesside with West Brom winning 1-0
12th October 1901 The 1st league fixture on Teesside between both teams, again West Brom been victorious 2-1, which was our only home defeat that season as we finished runners up to champions West Brom for our 1st ever promotion as a league club

Boro v West Brom fixture will be 53rd fixture on Teesside between the 2 teams with the following record:

Won - 29
Drew - 14
Lost - 9
Goals scored - 82
Goals against - 44

A number of players who have represented both team

David Mills: Played for the Boro in two separate spells, 1st spell between 1968-1979, playing 296 games & scoring 76 goals, he scored the only goal at Luton in 1974 to clinch the Boro the 2nd Championship, he asked for a transfer in 76 & the club put a £200k transfer fee on him, there were no takers, he eventually moved to WBA in 79, Ron Atkinson paying an English transfer fee of £500k & between 1979 -82 he played 59 games scoring 6 goals for West Brom. The late, great Willie Maddren re-signed DM for the Boro for season 1984-85 where he played 32 games, scoring 14 goals.

Bryan Robson: Robbo played 198 games for West Brom scoring 40 goals, he then signed for Man United where he stayed until 1994 when the chance to become player manager at the Boro was too good an opportunity for him & signed for the Boro between 1995 -2001, playing 28 games & scoring one goal, a thunder bolt at the east end seats of AP against Port Vale. BR brought something to the club that, as a long serving fan, I thought I would never see following my club, playing in a major cup final at Wembley, whatever the results he gave us all dreams

Tony Mowbray: Mogga played 348 games between1982-1991 for Boro scoring 25 goals, September 1982 Willie Maddren gave Mowbray his debut away to Newcastle, his role was to man mark Kevin Keegan, it worked, KK didn't score & we come away with a 1-1 draw. Mowbary left the Boro for Celtic & once his playing career was over managed a few teams, WBA being one of them, he returned to the Boro as manager between 2010 -2013

James Morrison: Played 66 games for the Boro between 2004-07 scoring 3 goals, his claim to fame, on the 30 September 2004 in a UEFA Cup tie, away at Banik Ostrava & making his EUFA cup debut, he scored the Boro's 1st ever away goal in our UEFA cup campaign. Morrison started for Middlesbrough in the 2006 UEFA Cup Final against Sevilla. In 2007 he left the Boro for WBA for £1.5M & to date played 254 games, scoring 28 goals, he got sent off in an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Manchester United for a kick out at Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jonathan Greening: Played 99 games for the Boro, between 2001-2004 scoring 4 goals, he signed for the Boro along with a united teammate of his, Mark Wilson, for a combined fee of £3M, he was voted Club player of the Year for 2002–03 and also selected for the full England squad (though he didn't play). JG signed for WBA & between 2004-2010 played 196 games, scoring 7 goals.

Chris Brunt: at the Boro between 2002-2004  never got any game time, after a few seasons at Sheff Weds he was transferred to WBA in 2007, played 286 games, scoring 39 goals.

Alan Miller - our 42nd different goalkeeper played 62 times for the Boro between 1994 & 1997, Alan had 3 separate spells at WBA, a loan spell before joining the Boro & while at the Boro he went back to WBA on loan before signing permanently in 1997, playing a total of 108 games

Matt Clarke - who was on loan at West Brom in 2020/21 for 33 games, scoring one goals signed for the Boro from Brighton in August 2022 on a 3 year contract, another player who has suffered a serious long term injury while at the Boro but is now playing well in the Boro backline

Tony Mowbray managed both teams

17th October 1987 - Colin Cooper scored his 1st Boro league goal with a last-minute winner at home to WBA

24th January 1981 - Remember beating them 1-0 in the 4th round of the FAC with Boro striker David Hogson suspended & standing in the holgate with his mates, Boro's goal coming from a 25 yard daisy cutter from Ian Bailey, somehow Tony Godden who could have thrown his hat on the ball went down in stages to collect the ball which went under his body for the only goal of the game, he later in the 2nd half saved a David Armstrong penalty, he redeemed himself but his forwards couldn't repay the favour & get the equaliser

Yes hope Jones is ok, he's vital to our team, as I've mentioned on here numerous times, his defenside side is very important to our game

Top stuff Erimus, a certain other site can only look in awe.

We will win tomorrow, pre Xmas still a great chance of top 6, semi of a major cup, a few new signings in the new year.

A great club on the up and well managed.

In With the Lurpak

Tony Mowbray: Mogga ....... WBA being one of them, he returned to the Boro as manager between 2010 -2013

Never realised he managed them he's been about like.

Boro to win on a penna ( Boro 2 - 1 Baggies )

Read this few years ago about west brom : West Bromwich in early Victorian times was a dirty, drunk-ridden town with nothing to do except work, drink, make children, and knock the wife about.

Sounds like the Tilery :charles:

borope

Mowbray was WBA manager on my first visit to the Hawthorns. A 3 nil win to WBA.  :carrick3:

Johnny Thunder

Sir Digby

Has there ever been a stranger shirt sponsor than this cracker?

3-2 to the mighty reds for a happy Christmas

Smoggers51

Great write up Erimus. Some interesting facts. I'm hoping Jones is up for today as we miss his defensive capabilities. Tricky fixture this given our injury list. I'm going for a 1-1 draw.

Glovers league debut, Clarke rested, Rogers included, nice to see Kavanagh & McCabe involved on the bench, yes due to the injuries but they may step up & become another Hackney

I would be happy if we just avoid defeat

erimus74

What an excellent save from Glover

teamboro

1-0 Rogers 💪💪💪💪

erimus74

A depleted team maybe, but we're not just hanging on but deservedly winning & competing as much as they are

erimus74

As well as Barlaser doing really well Howson is playing really well too, Engel is another down that side who West Brom need to keep an eye on

If we had a stronger team out I think we'd have got 2 or 3 in that half, they try to bully us with corners but nothing apart from that

erimus74

Can we show the same composure, will we start to tire, yet when we get into our full passing mood its tge end result that lets us down, but well done Rogers & Engel
