2 form teams going head to head this Saturday morning

Boro are in a much better place after a run of 5 games unbeaten, winning the last 4 & jumping from 24 to 16th, including our 1st league cleansheet of the season, moggas team who are in 4th place in the championship, mouth watering north east derby  at the SOL

We have improved so much since that 1st half shocker away to Sheff Weds, with Boro rooted at the foot of the Championship we now look at this fixture with a possibility of getting something from, as opposed to just going there with hope of not getting battered
Though for me, my biggest concern with them is Mogga, his teams usually come out on top of these games against us

Mogga will have them fired up from kickoff, in our faces, we need to play our normal game, keep possession, knock the ball around, slow the tempo right down, quieten the crowd, don't let them get into their stride, remove their threats on the wings & we're a good way to winning the game, easier said that done I know
If we can keep it tight we have pace to come on with Latte late

Jones is so important to us as is Greenwood who is starting to impose himself, he had a cracking game against Cardiff & playing against his home team he can thrive in the atmosphere

Howson, or Balasar, maybe too soon for Howson with been ill midweek, Balasar to keep him place for me
Engle against their speedy wingbacks, he had a great game Tuesday night, but away from home, big test for him could se Bagura come in there, but Carrick may see Engle as the right player after midweek, hopefully he has the confidence now knowing he can peform at this level

For me the team that started midweek should be the team that starts on Saturday

We've plated Sunderland in the PL, 1st division, 2nd division, FAC, league cup, Anglo Scottish Cup & Texaco cup

1st away fixture on Wearside  - 3rd December 1887 Sunderland 4 Boro 2
Won  - 14

A number of players who played for both team

Brian Clough - For Boro - 1955 - 61, 213 games scored 197 goals, for Sunderland - 1961 - 64, 61 games, scored 54 goals.
Stan Anderson - Captained all 3 north east teams, Boro, Newcastle & Sunderland, Boro were almost doomed when he took over but with his signings he made 66-67 a season to remember, for all the right reasons.
Alf Common - In February 1905, he broke the transfer record again by moving to Middlesbrough for £1,000, becoming the World's first £1000 Footballer. The Boro had purchased Common in an attempt to avoid relegation to the Second Division. His first game for Middlesbrough was on 25 February 1905, away to his former club Sheffield United. Boro won 1–0, with Common scoring from a penalty after 50 minutes, it was their first away win for nearly two years. Consequently, the team, who had so far been battling against relegation that season, survived the drop. He played 168 league games for Boro and scored 58 goals.
David Hodgson - Played for the Boro between 1978 -1982 - 125 games, scoring 16 goals then returning to the Boro in 1987 on loan for 2 games, it should have been more but Hodgy was sent off in his 2nd game at AP & never played again. In between he played for Sunderland between 1984 - 86 - 40 games & scored 5 goals.
Mark Proctor - Played for the Boro between 1978 -1981 - 109 games, scoring 12 goals then returning to the Boro in 1989 -1993 - 120 games, 6 goals. In between he played for Sunderland between 1983 - 87 - 117 games & scored 20 goals.
Stan Cummins - He played for Boro between 1975 -79 - 44 games, 9 goals. In January 1978 Boro beat Newcastle 4–2 at St. James Park & Cummins scored Boro's fourth goal prompting match commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme to say another of his famous one liners. Immediately after the goal Wolstenholme said "That gives him (Cummins) ten out of ten & one for neatness".In December '78 Boro beat Chelsea 7-2 at Ayresome Park & Cummins had four assists. He joined Sunderland in November 1979 at the age of 20, for £300,000, the Club's most expensive signing in their 100-year history. Between 1979 - 1983, he played 133 games, 29 goals, & resigned for Sunderland 1984-85 season, 17 games 0 goals.
Gary Rowell - Played 257 games for Sunderland scoring 88 goals between 1974 - 84. Played 27 games for the Boro season 1985-86 scoring 10 goals.
Alan Foggan - Played 115 games for the Boro between 1972 -1976 - scoring 45 goals, he was Stan Anderson's penultimate signing, made 8 appearances for Sunderland with no goals in season 1976-77
Grant Leadbitter - Played 111 games for Sunderland scoring 11 goals between 2003 - 09. Signing for the Boro in 2012 played 164 games scoring 24 goals.
Paddy McNair - Tony Pulis signed Paddy at the start of the 2018 season for £5m, playing approx 145 games, scoring 13 goals

Shay Given - He became only the sixth player to have represented Boro, Newcastle & Sunderland, after Joseph Blackett, William Agnew, Tommy Urwin, Stan Anderson & Alan Foggon and the first to do so since 1976, when Foggon made his debut for Sunderland.
Zenden – Signed for the Boro onloan in season 2003-04 & played 31 goals scoring 4 goals, including a memorable cup final winning penalty, signed the following season playing 36 games & scoring 5 goals, Lazio being one of em, left for Liverpool the following season, 05-06 & in season 2009-2011 his career took a turn for the worse when he signed for Sunderland, playing 47 games & scoring a lucky 4 goals
Peter Davenport – 1988–89 signed for the Boro manager Bruce Rioch but managed just four goals from 24 games in as Boro slipped back into the Football League Second Division just one season after promotion. 1989–90 was even tougher as Boro narrowly avoided a second successive relegation and Davenport managed a mere three goals from 35 league games, and by the end of the season Rioch had gone and Boro were now managed by Colin Todd.

In July 1990, he signed for their local rivals Sunderland who had just been promoted to the First Division

Agree Mogga teams always seem to come out on top against us 0-2 Bluderland hope I'm wrong

Great thread Erimus as usual

Excellent write up Erimus on the Boro v Sunderland game and nice to see the little photo of young Bradley.

I can see this one going maybe end to end a fair bit, especially if a first goal goes in for either side.

My prediction is the first goal might not be the winning goal but the team that scores it will win the game for me. 3-2 scoreline just not sure who to, apart from hoping it is a Boro win.

It should be a cracker.

Sir Digby

Early start tomorrow. Coach managed to avoid the police escort last season, but not tomorrow 😞. Will be using my card for a few before so they don't raid my pockets again at the turnstiles.

The loss of O'Brien till in to the new year is a massive blow, but good news on other playets in VDB, Dijksteel, Bangura all back in contention, that has lifted the mood in the club, Howson, for me bench at best

But one for me, as mentioned in theopening MDT is Greenwood, he could be a big player for us if he can build on his Cardiff game, though Michael Carrick might revert back to Crooks for this one, Jones does seem to benefit more with Crooks feeding him, helping him

Lenihan another absentee due to illness shouldnt walk back in the team, McNair had a really good, steady game & IMHO, when hes been left out & came in hes done well

Smith done well also

One thing I've noticed is the lack of posys on Dieng, this time last season thete were threads eveyday on Steffen, not just on here with fans divided between him, he didnt really win over all the fans, on the otherhand Dieng has been excellent, probably our best summer recruitment & worthy of been our No1 & for me a better all round keeper than Steffen, who I thought was decent enough

Mike Peeler

I will be punting 3-2 on Boro but could see them also winning by a similar scoreline - the first goal as I touched on yesterday is fairly critical, I would say in this one.

I will wait for the sides before deciding on who my poke is going on.

Why must I feel like that . . . Why must I chase the 🐈
