From a rifles perspective I have chosen the taking of Pegasus bridge the first operation on D-Day. Taken by 2nd Battalion the ox and bucks light infantry (now rifles) using gliders 👍👍👍👍 later handed over to the paratroopers who lost it!

All those that fought for our freedoms, if only now they could see what Britain has turned into, would never have jumped into them boats to France.

you don't know that. They fought Nazism I am pretty sure they would be delighted with the UK today. It's enlightened, rich, a decade of crime at record lows, still a democracy, a major referendum with a very tight result accepted without violence. My old fellas grandchildren all have good jobs, well educated, healthy because of the NHS and house owners.

Don't forget they lived with back to back housing, outside toilets, poverty we would not understand, Rickets, pissed up blokes on a Friday,  I am sure they think today is better.

tunstall

Absolutely

You think the UK is a bad place to live? It really isn't

You can't imagine the feeling of terror those lads must have been feeling as they waited to get off the landing crafts and boats.

I agree with Blotty as well. I have a young son and I do worry about what he is growing up into, but my Dad did for me and my Grandad for my Dad.

I just think the older you get the tolerance levels go. I was going mad about some broken glass on the cycle path near me the other day and then reminded myself that as a daft 14 year old me and some mates made molotov cocktails and smashed them in a subway one summer as we were bored..............the only snag being we filled the bottles with diesel ffs.

Was thinking more the social aspects of society, than places. However, some places fall under the same criticism.

I asked my dad if he was frightened. This is no joking he said, I quite fancied a few weeks at a French seaside.

Nothing but respect from me.

Somebody mentioned the fear when they landed and i agree. I would have needed new pants.

The noises and smells and comrades falling.

Bravest of the brave.

Not the same thing at all but you're spot on with the smell. The smell of burning flesh when someone is blown up or shot isn't like anything else.

Done a few battlefield tours in the army and we did one to Normandy a few year back. We went to Omaha beach which was the worst of the beach landings. We walked out to where the yanks got off the landing crafts in the sea and fuck me it was a good way out and deep. To the beach and the German bunkers and defence towers was all up hill. How they did it with full kit on legging it uphill through sea and sand is unbelievable. I salute every last one of them

my dad used to tell us porkies all the time. Not once did he give us any detail. But he had a story about the Beyuex Tapestry that we thought was gold dust. The tapestry was locked away throughout the war, he made it up.

He told us he has been to Checezlovakia, my mam told him to stop lying to us, when we received his war papers after he died, he had been there.

A great story about the IOW, him and another lad helped a pub landlord unload his beer kegs into the cellar. He gave them a half each. When they left the beer kegs were back where they started.

he was just a typical Boro Town bloke. Funny as f, never swore. My mam had to work 2 jobs as he was broke by the time he got home on a Friday night, what he had left she pinched from his pockets.

Mam rented  colour TV, he went berserk until he realised he could see the colours of the jockies.

Normal life of the time. I can't remember him shouting at us never mind hit us, never.
