Goalkeeper came across from Australia under John Neals first season as manager, recommended by Graeme Souness who represented West Adelaide for a few games in the summer of 77
Unfortunately the keeper found the good, old English weather to cold for him & returned home.
Luckily another young Australian who had paid his own airfare from downunder a couple of years earlier & through sheer guts & determination was to make a massive impact that very season

BoroRedKen

Aussie goalkeepers!

Mark Bosnic!

Say no more!.

BoroRedKen

Good job i had no voice at 7 yrs old!

1983 Ken

22/9/1983 - His final appearance was away to Fulham in a 2-1 defeat

BoroRedKen

So very nearly a "big thing" was Wood.

BoroRedKen

Bit like Steve Bell.

Loved him on his game.

For me Darren Wood was the real deal at the Boro
Willie Maddren didn't want to lose him & knew his hands were tied with no money from the transfer going into buying players so basically asked for Tony McAndrew as part of the deal

Darren Wood wore shirt Nos 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 & 12

You really rated him then mate?

Its the time i was really taking notice of the Boro. About '81 onwards.

I was a half decent keeper myself!

Played Sunday league for a couple of places.

Getting arthritis at 16 then by 22/23 just could not play anymore.

Won leagues with the Boys club as a young un.

Was about 13 and we did a lap of Ayresome Park just before kick off after winning the league 1 year.

Nice to think that maybe some of the real old fucks OTR once cheered Nekder!!

Still do it now actually. I do find myself watching the keepers. Never thought about it like that.

Had some cracking footballers in my year at school. 1 lad was Forset. 1 at Spurs. 2 with Sunderland.

The lad that was at Forest was different class. 12 yr old and playing against blokes and made them look daft on a pitch. You could not even get near to him in a game to buckle him. Could do any postion with ease.
I would go as far as too say he was was probably top 10 in the country as kids.

Hit 17 and walked away from it.

1 of my Brothers was dynamite. Boro wanted him. I think he joined the Army instead.

Love hearing stuff like this, cheers Ken

My bro lost his leg in a motorbike accident years later.

Used to go on the beach with him and even then he made me look daft! Shot like a rocket. And watching a fella with 1 false leg doing tekkers was unbelievable.

BoroRedKen

Round about 20 yr older than me so i dont know about his footy prowess growing up except it was said that everywhere he went he had a footy at his feet. Shop, school, trips, bedroom..

BoroRedKen

Remembering back we had a girl at school who was some player also.

Not many girls teams around back then. It was all hockey and netball for them.
