Following his pledge that he'll never return to league management a very good friend of Malcolm Allison, our director/chairman at the time McCulloch, changed big Mal's mind to return to football & with it, a 2 year contract was agreed & signed
For me, big Mal doesn't get enough credit for what he did in his time at the Boro, he kept us in the division with such a small squad, he worked miracles to get us over the line

Character he was! And got a tune out of Irving Nattress( class player but always crocked) and Kevin Beattie - same applied to him. Two very, very good footballers.

So true on both players Nosmo-King, Beattie was a class player who proved it even with one good leg & Irving Natrass even played every minute in every season of 1983/84 after big Mals time mind

I was lucky enough to work behind the bar of The Duke of Wellington pub in Welbury over a three year period when I was home for holidays from uni. It was owned and run by John and Betty Salton (God rest their souls) and their daughter Lynn was Big Mal's partner.
I used to get a half hour chat with Mal when I had to open up for them on Saturday and Sunday evenings. I'd pour him a whisky and he'd light up a big cigar and we'd chat about the Boro and his time there and at Man City and Palace. He was a wonderful teller of stories and a very kind and generous fella. He made a point of talking about what I was doing and what my life was like in Manchester. We talked about the area around Platt Lane (the old City training ground) where I was living at the time.
They were great days and I have very happy memories of those chats and of the entertainment and colour he brought to a  North Yorks village pub full of farmers.

R.I.P Big Mal

Losing £12,000 a week 42 years ago, Lot of money back then no wonder bankruptcy followed 4 years later with £2 Million debts .

To think some players are paid a £million a game these days if not more.

Nattrass - when fit - was a class above what he had in those days.

IF his career hadn't been so injury prone he could conceivably got near an England cap. Seriously!!

Most memorable game under his reign has got to be the cup game v Arsenal.

Sugrue on fire that game. Fairly short career at Boro. My favourite player at the time.

After his MOTM performance against Arsenal in round 3 he scored a brace v Bournemouth in a 2-0 home win in round 4 which should, in his words, been an FAC hat trick
Loved his time here, it was his birthday yesterday

Good times under big Mal & none more so than one of the famous games which @markmywords mentioned when Mick Baxter headed the winning goal in our excellent 3-2 third round FAC win over Arsenal
