After knocking out Sunderland in the previous round 1-0 at Ayresome Park following a draw 2-2 at Roker Park we were travelled to Everton & came away with a well deserved 2-2 at Goodison Park with Everton arriving at Ayresome Park for a league cup 3rd round replay

Boro totally dominated the first half yet found ourselves 2 goals down as half time approacehed, we absolutely battered Everton that night but for one man who kept everything out that was flung at him, by far the best player on the pitch that night, George Wood, he was immense

On the stroke of HT we eventually pulled a goal back through David Mills, even though we had enough chances to win 3 games George Wood wasn't going to conceded again & the final whistle blew with Everton progressing & Boro bowing out

This happened to be John Neals 1st cup exit as Boro boss & one he will think to himself over & over again, how did we lose that game, 2 words, George Wood

I would think still to this day George Wood will remember that day & be proud of his MOTM display

We gained revenge later that season when Everton came to Ayresome Park in the 4th round of the FAC, Craig Johnston's debut.
Boro were leading 3-0 with a brace from David Mills & a 1st goal for the Boro from John Mahoney, Duncan McKenzie came on & changed the game, they dominated scoring two late goals but we hung on for the win, sort of tables had turned
