When Boro & Charlton fought out a record 6-6 at the Valley with Brian Clough scoring his 10th & penultimate Boro hat trick, the clubs 18th away treble & 94th in total.

With only one defeat in 11 games Boro travelled to South east London to play Charlton Athletic in a 2nd division game that resulted in a scoreline which is still joint record score draw to this day

Unbeaten in the last 4 games, Boro were in confident mood going in to this fixture, especially against a team  that had failed to register a cleansheet all season & with Brian Clough, scoring in all but one of the last 8 games, we had a goalscorer that the rest of the division feared & on this day he didn't disappoint. Ron Burbeck scored a brace & Derek McLean strike completed the scoring for Boro, taking their goals totals to the season to 15, 3 & 3 respectively

The game was raining goals, with the half time score 4-4,  seven of the 12 goals were scored in a 17 minute spell, Boro were leading 6-5 until the 89th minute when John Sommers equalised

Bob Dennison's Boro went onto finish in 5th place, 10 points off runners up Sheff Utd, out of both cups at the first stage. Brian Clough finished top league scorer with 40 goals from 34 league games
