Merse wasn't the most intelligent player ever for us. True, he can to us for one reason - money.

However to be fair to him he earned his corn on the pitch. Whatever people think of him no one can be dismissive of the impact he made on us as a team being arguably the one player whose contribution got us promoted.

That to me is the reason I will always rate Merson and be thankful for what he did for us - on the pitch.

Lids, the others you cite were nowhere near Merson's influence and importance to the team. He was the standout performer and very much the key to us getting back to the Prem. Without him it is highly probable we wouldn't have got promotion. He was that good.

No single player since him has been able to influence us to the degree he did - that's why we are still a Championship club without a genuine chance of getting back to the Prem.
