Hi all.

Im trying to get myself into some sort of shape.

A couple of stat's.........

I'm 6ft 1 and fast approaching 60.  At Christmas I was 19 stone.  Adjusting my diet helped me lose 3 stone, but then I flat lined so started walking for an hour, 4 days a week.  This helped me lose another 7lbs.  Now I've flat lined again!  I can't do running as I've had both hips replaced so running is a non starter!

My target is to get into a pair of 36 trousers by Remembrance Sundayas I'm ex military and always march. Had to get rid of old suit as it was now far too big!  (I'm currently 38 waist.....don't ask what I was at Christmas......it's embarrassing!)

Any sensible help/advice greatly appreciated!

Any non sensible advice/sarcasm/crude comments with be taken with a pinch of salt! 😉

Thanks

Walking is good mate trying to do step challenges etc with the use of hills if running is out of the question maybe even do some light tabbing? How do you get on with cycling?  Diet is the most important aspect depending on how extreme you'd be willing to go. I have a mainly carnivore diet with some exceptions and it's pretty good. Alcohol is the worst thing for you but I can't help myself with that.

If you want me to knock up a diet and exercise plan for you let us know 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Buy a decent rowing machine for an all body workout or go swimming

Thanks Rifle!  I think my current diet isnt too bad, as I say, I lost 3 stone through sensible eating!  But I guess trying a properly thought out meal plan won't do any harm so that would be appreciated!  I could do more (vigorous) walking, and intermittent fasting is one to think about, although I dont want to lose too much more weight generally speaking.....just the belly blubber!

It's mostly about your diet but exercise will definitely help, and help you feel better

I second the rowing machine idea, that's what I did as it's low impact and it's something I can keep up at work cos most gyms offshore will have a rowing machine

Also look into fasting as mentioned above, the health benefits are numerous. This is something else I do

Have you cut out/down the drink? That's the hardest thing for me really cos I like a good piss-up

Fasting is a bit of cheat code mate. I use it daily. To keep it sustainable remember to treat yourself once or twice a week. I do a lot of one meal a day stuff and it does help. Meat and protein makes up 80 percent of my daily food intake. Instead of say rice or pasta I will have 3 or 4 eggs cooked in any way you like.

Light tabbing can have a lot of benefits. If he's after limited impact then fair enough stick to rowing and swimming.

I walk/bus most places.

For a good "old fashioned" workout i have a heavy bag suspended and i try to get on that for a while every few days.
That also helps mentally which i believe is also part and parcel of trying to stay fit(tish).

I suffer with the food intake bit. Wrong stuff wrong times.

No advice Im afraid but wishing you success,Im no Olympian but probably as light as I have been in over 20yrs, mainly cutting down on portions and lots of steps 👍

For the next few days eat exactly how you would and track how many calories you're having, then put yourself in a calorie deficit, you can use online tools to work out how many you should be having, but good to work out how many you were already having too.

Agreed on the lifting weights, any movement that gets your heart rate up is better than doing nothing.

Look into functional strength training, help you stay fit but also working on the parts of your body you need to keep in good shape as you get older, and not workouts for vanity.

When you're dieting focus on calories rather than what you're eating, if you just eat "healthy" food you could be more likely to give up.

0 sugar drinks, no booze, etc are good things to do too.

Look at walking workouts on YouTube if your hip mobility isn't great.

Would you consider swimming?

Try incorporating your fitness regime with daily tasks such as walking to the shops rather than taking the car.

Dont worry too much about your new hips and walking I had one of mine done nearly 5 years ago and walk a lot with zero problems.

Cycling is a good option especially again with the new hips try making it fun I recently got a cheap crappy electric bike but its great fun riding around the forest tracks near me, its amazing the amount of wildlife you see on a bike and you still get a decent workout.

Swimming or resistance exercising in a pool if you like that sort of thing.

Rucking - I wear a 50lb backpack while walking the dogs 4-5 miles about 3-5 times a week. Walk at a decent pace (~ 4 mile an hour).  If the weather is shitty or too hot then I do some HIIT or exercise bike instead.

Weights/circuit training 4 times a week.

Diet - cut down sugar, carbs and booze plus some fasting if trying to lose weight.

Different intensity helps me either lose or maintain weight but always makes me feel way better.

Drinking plenty of water..

Getting into a regular sleeping pattern.

Meditation, reducing stress.
