It will do if you cook it in the pan for a while - so what you do is cook all the other stuff in the pan then add biggish chunks/cubes into the "sauce" in an oven dish, cover it with mash and then straight in the oven for 15/20 minutes.  It breaks down a bit but doesn't disappear.  Worth a try anyhow.
