Schnitzel, Bech & Cheese - a high calorie food born out of poverty during the Great Depression of 1920's America.

So many innovations and variations over recent years.. the hotshot and parmo in a bun being the most successful. With garlic sauce? Essential!

But beetroot! or at least beatroot coleslaw.. total game changer for the bun variety!

It was born in the boro in the Europa restrant in 78/79,,All us taxi drivers had them as a takeaway most nights,, the yanks may have had something similar in 1928 but it. Wasn't a Parmo,, as for beetroot FFS, rant over,,

BoroRedKen

The Europa! What a gaff.

Had too many Parmos in there.

Me and my mate had a fall out 1 night and ended scrapping with each other in there. The waiters and staff were sound about it just basically let us sort it out.

Until i went through the big front window from a cracking uppercut!

My god. Some of them lil fellas could scrap!

Calm down Mary.

BoroRedKen

I agree Easty.

It was always a cracking night out round town then finishing off at the Europa (unless we were going to Ramseys blues then i could not eat!).

It is a lifetime ago.

BoroRedKen

The word "Woolen" aint right spelling is it?....

Clem Fandango

I had my first parmo in the Europa too.  What time did it used to be open until?  I remember it being late and going in there after kicking out at the Madhouse.  But that seems like a false memory unless it was open until 3am or something.  Hmmm.

BoroRedKen

It was open after the clubs kicked out Clem.

I used to work for the bloke that owned Bibi's in Redcar. I worked in there when we started parmos. No other place was doing them and they were pork 1's.

On a weekend we were still knocking them out at 4am.

Wow. Didn't even realise it was two separate places. Rumour is, Valentino's across the road from ograys pool room is decent for a parmo. Next time I tick into one, I'll be thinking of you genius to bring it round readers 😀

Same guy, at the time, also owned Amies that used to be near the sweet shop alley. That was his "posh" restaurant.

Now I had an Amies pork parmo with the leek sauce they did. Absolutely amazing.
