I've put this post on FMTTM but also felt that some of the posters on here might benefit from it.

I have always gone to Boots or Specsavers for my glasses but my eldest put me on to Glasses Direct about a year ago. I have looked at the website and glasses but wasn't comfortable having someone make my glasses who I hadn't had personal contact with. I have always worn varifocals and my last pair of glasses cost £460 for one pair. Last month they give up the ghost and the arm fell off. I have had them for less than two years but I do tend to abuse my glasses.

At the end of May I went to get my eyes tested and there was just a slight difference in my prescription and decided to take the plunge with Glasses Direct and would have saved a lot of money if I had done it earlier.. Choosing and tailoring your glasses to meet your budget and needs could not be simpler. I was advised to select 'add prescription later' and this allows you to take a photo of your prescription and email it to Glasses Direct when prompted. I received an email requesting my pupil distance and again this was simple enough using the app downloaded onto a smartphone. My order was placed late on Friday 28/05/24 and my glasses arrived this morning, taking less than 6 working days.

The total cost for my varifocals glasses was £256 for two pairs. I chose non-brand glasses and have usually gone for a branded pair but for the savings I made it was a non-brainer to paying what I did two years back.

Cheers Norman.
I've always thought online would be fine for single vision specs but was always a bit dubious when it comes to varifocals, because of the different measurements needed in addition to PD.
Needed for the height of the reading bit of the lens mainly, which is specific to the size of the lens and how the frame sits on your nose.
Massive saving though and hopefully yours will be fine 👍

I always buy branded frames; Oakley, Ray Ban, Boss. Usually always from eBay. Fitted with varifocal lenses at Asda Opticians, Portrack Lane. £130 all in.

I had to download an app suggested by Glasses Direct for the PD measurement and followed the instructions on that.  I had to take a selfie whilst holding a credit card to my forehead.  I looked pathetic and it took a few goes due to the wife taking the piss.  Other than that, it was straight forward.

I didn't know Asda did glasses.  Worth knowing.

I was in there one night when there was a quiz on. The first question was, Who you fucking looking at?

And imho getting glassed directly is infinitly better than a 3rd party glassing.....
