Then onto proper wages second year after being kept on from the Foundation Course.

Got my wish working for ICI after numerous failed attempts when I eventually got in at North Tees in 1986 & have 11 shifts til I retire

Quote from: fukyu on June 09, 2024, 04:32:36 PMBSC for me, training school oct-december shifts from January in the steel mill, was still sixteen. This happened a few times, I was in the operating box when a bar hit the window, the lads played fuck they said you run when that happens. Too daft to know.

What year was that? I'm guessing i was the YTS intake well before you, 1979
I was in the oct 1977 intake on BSC books.I was on nights when the two lads were killed on the boss plant riding the conveyor belt, the other junior op on our shift was supposed to meet them in the canteen, he was lucky he never went..All the flyme wankers  who never worked there wanting the steelworks preserved make me laugh. It was a dirty dangerous place and apart from providing jobs had no redeeming  qualities.Goodbye and good riddance.

Yea they were strict as fuck with us young'uns when we started cos of the two lads dying, had to tell the gaffer were we were going, even for a shite

Joined the Army straight from school.  Failed the first medical but was put on a high protein diet for 3 months and then met the minimum weight and height requirements.  I must have been a late developer as I was 6 foot when I finished basic training.

Went to Essex University in the September 1985 after sixth form. I lasted one day!! (It was the south, I should have known). Went to work as a pipe-fitter's mate for Kavanagh & Smith in Newton Aycliffe, did that for a year then went to Manchester Uni.

Cleveland ITEC in the town on Albert Road for me on a YTS.

Learned absolutely nothing and left after about 6 months.

Highlights were someone dropping loads of laxatives in the instructors tea.

Some lad brought in a floppy disk with pixel porn on it.

Some cunt let my tyres down on my bike chained up outside.  I rode all the way from Yarm...

1979  Started my Havc apprenticeship in Preston 2 months after leaving school in Shildon.

My father, God bless him, had the foresight of impending industrial doom and shipped the family off to Blackpool.
