David Armstrong, born this day 1954

David played 416 games between 1970-81, scoring 73 goals, only 3 of those games as sub

He started out at the Boro from the age of 9, signed as an amateur in 1968, an apprentice in June 1970 & a full time pro on new years eve 1971

Registered No490 when he made his debut as a 17 year out away to Blackpool April 1972

His amazing consecutive run of 356 games, league games, FAC, LC & 99% of pre season friendlies

Started his amazing consecutive run of appearences at home to Aston Villa on the 24th March 1973, just one day short of one year later in the 1st team he scored the only goal to clinch promotion to the 1st division, his consectutive run of games ended on the 6th September 1980, home to Nottm Forest

Unbelievable record that will never be beaten, from a great, great player, who should have won more England caps

RIP David Armstrong one of the Charltons Champions

Old fella used to talk about him in his later years. "Spike" he said they called him, great player

Not only the best player to wear the No.11 shirt but the best player to wear a Boro shirt full stop, as far as I'm concerned.

Souness for me but thats my opinion, I certainly wouldn't disagree with your point, he was a top class player who we were lucky to have seen him play for us

Speaks volunes for him when you think he played for Saints & in less playing times, think maybe 100 appearences less he scored the same amount of goals & is highly rated by Saints fans who watched him in a very good Southampton team

A true legend indeed

tunstall

Didn't he play a ridiculous amount of games in a row for us?

A bit before my time but I definitely know of his legendary status within the club

What a player, Mr Consistency.

Him and Bobby Murdoch were my favourites when I took my first steps on the torturous Boro road.

Though my height and no nonsense style (👀) dictated that I identified as a Stuey Boam on the pitch.

I have his signed autobiography (he done a book signing in Gizzy).

Read that if you have not or a bit like me and Spike was just before you can remember.

RIP Spike x

April 1972 my father took me to Blackpool for the match when it was announced he was making his debut as a 17 year old. He had a full head of hair then and looked like a stiff breeze would blow him over. I think he played up front that day as he had a really good scoring record for the junior team.

Best central midfielder I've seen in a Boro shirt. He had the lot.

There were some big keepers at most top flight clubs back then mind Ken

ADMINISTRATOR 1

That is, as much as it pains me to say, what i would say E-man.

There were quality keepers around that time.

Nowadays there are some frankly bang average keepers playing at a very decent level.

Pearsy was capped by England whilst at Boro was he not?

Blott

Platty played CF again the St Marys College open prison one year.

I agree on Spike. A great no 11.

Before him was David Chadwick a brilliant winger.

He was added to an England sqaud but Dion Dublin, Cambridge striker at the time, I think it was, smashed into him, fracturing his cheekbone resulting in him withdrawing from the squad & out injured

Not chosen for the squad again unfortunately
