I was in the south terrace, chicken run, along with my dad

Whoever was there that day will have witnessed Noel Brotherson, RIP (left football to become a painter & decorator, he sadly passed away at 38 years of age of a heart attack) he absolutely torture us from kick off, we were on the end of a few thumpings that season

3 down within 25 minutes & 4 down at HT

Yellow rose before the game, a few beers then a 5 minute walk to Ayresome Park

Not a bad team TBH, some good names there, think the cloud aroud the club at that time was so bad we just couldnt move forward

Jim Platt
Paul Ward
Joe Bolton
Mick Baxter
Colin Ross
Darren Wood
Mick Kennedy
Ray Hankin
Heine Otto
Stephen Bell
David Shearer
Sub
Terry Cochrane - Scored our goal

Attendance: 10,821

Dispite the grim times back then between 1981 to 1986 I still look back with fondness on those days supporting & following the Boro to away games

IMHO, big Mal was good for us, it says how good he was keeping us up with such a small group of players, dragging us away from a consecutive relegation

Big Mal was great. And I'm with you, I loved that period 81-86.
That was when it really became 'my' team, and not just a team I supported as a kid.
Noel Brotherston, bloody hell. Me and my mate called him the Mad Professor. He destroyed us with his crazy potions and trickery.
I never found out if he was always that good or was it another example of a one-off 'worldy against the Boro'?

He did have a look of the Mad Professor didnt he, he was just as good the following season when Rovers again beat us, but no battering this time, 2-1 at our place

What was the main reason behind the decline in the clubs fortunes?

Spot on 100% Atomic

6th December 1980 in a snow stormed 2-1 home win over Aston Villa with goals from Craig Johnston & David Shearer this young, exciting team that John Neal was building was looking forward to the new year & another year of progression, exciting signings to go with this very good team but sunday more I read the back headlines of the Subday People with a quote from John Neal, who should have been over the moon with a great win, but his words were splahed thete in black & white
"I WISH I COULD KEEP THIS TEAM TOGETHER"

The beginning of the end, the new year started well, cup run going well, wembley beckoned, QF's v Wolves, full house, lose the replay then the big names, our crown jewels were sold, the decline lasted till the 21st May 1986 😔
