My 2nd ever away Boro game when my dad took me & his ICI work colleague to the Sheffield Wednesday game, my previous away game was Boro's last away game on the 11th which seen us win 1-0, courtecy of a John Hickton goal

I remember we went in a pub before the game, I was 12 so drinking soft drinks, a Boro fan came in covered in blood with a bobby & the bobby said, are they in here, could you imagibe that happening today!

At the game we sat in the seats that were put in for the 66 world cup took

John Hickton scored a penalty to put the mighty Boro in front, this was his 3rd goal v Sheff Weds in 5 games against them since we signed him from Sheff Weds, his 1st goal at Hillsborough though

The afternoon didn't turn out to good a day for big John, or the Boro fans

Jim Platt saved a 1st half penalty from Tommy Craig, the referee deemed Jim had moved to soon & the spot kick was retaken, again jim Platt was to be successful a 2nd time & dived the right way to save the 2nd spot kick                                                                                Sheff Wed equalised on half time & the 2nd half was one way traffic, eventually we couldnt cope & Tommy Craig, who missed the 1st half penalty, scored a scorcher, I can still see him running away towards their kop with his arms aloft

We had led, Jim Platt had saved 2 penalties & we lost 2-1, 2 away games for me, one win & a loss, my said leaving the groubd, welcome to the the Boro son

Great memories there Erimus,I was probably at that game.I was 19 then and used to travel to away games in a Bedford van with at least 8 of us in the back.imagine doing that now ??

Looking at that team I'm guessing Maddren played in midfield. I remember Gordon Jones. Good fullback, great left foot but lacked a bit of pace. I think he got a couple of England u23 caps before I started going to games. Great club servant.

Willie Maddren started off as a CF, scored a number of goals, played in midfield too but right from the onset he looked at himself as a centre back & for me, what a cultured CB he was, in my time Boro's best ever defender

RIP Willie x

I saw him play CF a few times. One that sticks in my mind was against Sheff wed I think. He scored and also took a wack on the head and was bandaged up. He was useful as a CF, bang average in midfield and one of the best centre backs I've seen.

SHOOT program in the 70's use to open with a Willie Maddren super strike at Ayresome Park early 70's v Swindon

Remember that yes. I was at the game. I'm sure you will have the lineup for that game. I thought he was playing centre back that game. I remember he was playing midfield at the start of 73/74 with Brian Taylor at centre back. That season took off when Souness tookover in midfield at Maddren moved to centre back.

Thats cotrect, Souness came on for Taylor & Willie Maddren alongside Boam & the telepathic twins were born
