We hadnt played Leeds in a top flight game since Christmas day 1946 when both teams fought out a 3-3 draw

Leeds United legend big Jack took his champions & returned to the ground he had played his entire professional career at, great memories, winning major honours & I think, he holds the most appearence in their history, the game billed as the Champions v the Champions

Thousands of Boro fans were littered around the ground, with many locked outside
The game kick off at a frantic pace with Boro falling two goals behind

Stuey Boam pulled one back, Leeds 2 Boro 1 & this is how it stayed as the teams left the field at HT
Malcolm Smith brought the game level in the 2nd half when scoring a beauty, the Boro fans went balistic

Jack must have been a very proud man, taking his team, the mighty Boro to Elland Road to play champions Leeds on a level playing field

Back then Boro wernt just making up the numbers in the 1st division but to make an impact

Big Jacks team

In my time - All my opinion below

Jim Platt - Favourite & best Boro keeper
John Craggs - Best ever Boro right back
Frank Spraggon- Our 1st FAC sub
Graeme Souness - Best ever all round Boro player, Stan Andersons final signing
Stuey Boam - Favourite & best Boro captain
Willie Maddren - Right up there with Souness, unbelievable player, whatever position, Stuey Boam once said at a former playets reunion, if Willie Maddren played in goal he would be tbe best
Bobby Murdoch - Awesome signing - Final piece of the jigsaw for big Jack
Malcolm Smith - Scored brace on his 2nd game, full debut v Sunderland Aug 1972
John Hickton - Mr Middlesbrough, enough said
Alan Foggon - Stan Andersons penultimate signing
David Armstrong - Unbelievable Mr Consistency, like the late, great Willie Maddren, should have represented England many, many times
Sub
Alan Willey - Future American legend

I was there. Went with mate from school and his parents. We travelled by car and then had to get a local bus to the ground. The atmosphere was very intimidating around the ground and getting to the ground. Don't remember much of the game other than going 2 down and Malcolm Smith's leveller. Was a good season to follow the team. Went to quite a few of the away games and all home games.

Poor Spraggon, amongst all those greats and the biggest accolade he gets is "1st FAC sub".
The unsung hero in a team of legends.

Was he the longest serving player in that team? He must have been, he'd been there since the early 60s.
He saw it all - relegation to the 3rd, promotion back to the 2nd and then up to the 1st.
Played under Raich Carter, Stan Anderson, Harold Sheperdson (his father-in-law) & Big Jack.

I was there! I think the stand we were in was being redeveloped and there were hundreds of Boro fans in the home end( Gelderd). I recall them being marched towards our end that was already packed to the rafters.

Needed your wits about you travelling there - no place for the faint hearted for sure!

Blott

I was there with my brother, we were in the Leeds end with I can't guess how many Boro fans. We just ran passed the Boro end due to the queues.

I would have got the score wrong, but that's age for you.

It was utter mayhem, Fatty Fergo was like a one man assault team, he saved a lot of lads getting a good hiding. It was standing and he opened a circle space they tried that hard to get away from him. I was no hero but we stayed throughout the game I supposed at 15 you don't give a shit.

Don't forget they were the good times, what a load of bollax.
