9th September 1899 - Boro's 1st home game as a league club

Small Heath, now Birmingham City, had been a member of the football league since 1892/93 & had previously spent 2 seasons in the 1st divison, arrived at Linthorpe road in this 2nd divison fixture
Small Heath were playing their 2nd fixture of the season, beating Walsall at home 3-2 in the seasons opener, the Boro were playing their 3rd game of their debut season, 2 games, 2 defeats, unfortunatly we were to suffer our 3rd consecutive defeat & again, conceding three goals

Small Heath won this game on Teesside 3-1 with CF Bob McRoberts scoring a hat trick, our historical home goal was scored by our 16th registered player, Michael Murphy, becoming the 1st Boro player to score a home league goal & 1st Boro player to score on his Boro debut

Boro manager John Robson had seen his team lose 3 games on the bounce since becoming a member of the football league 0-3, 1-3 & 1-3

Michael Murphy scored 2 goals in 2 games for the mighty Boro

The 1st time we won on this day as a league club & after losing the previos 4 games on this day was 1911 season when we beat Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at Ayresome Park

Our goals coming from another iconic CF George Elliott & Harry Leanoard

Attendance - 19,147

On this day 1893 Middlesbrough Ironoplis played their 3rd game as a football league club, in only the one season in the football league, sadly, going the same way as the previous two, with a defeat, losing 4-0 at Burslem Port Vale

In fact leading up to the QPR game our local radio said the present season is our worst start ever, well it wasnt, I know people cant just grab seasons results out of thin air, do some research before saying something youre not 100% sure on, theres information out there

Our 1st season in the football league sen us lose our 1st 3 & draw the 4th game, similar to this season, 1984/5 was worse though

Standards in journalism are pretty poor these days
