7th September 1901 - Stockport County 1 Boro 3

This was our 3rd season as a football league club, the 1st season we failed to record one win on our travels, the 2nd season we won 4 away games

Our goals scored at Edgly Park were as follows
William Wardrobe, registered No39, scoring his 15th Boro career goal
Joe Cassidy, registered No61 & later to make history when scoring the 1st league goal at Ayresome Park, scored on his debut & becoming the 12th Boro player to do so
James Tennant, registered No63, scored on his debut & becoming the 13th Boro player to do so

We finished the campaigne second on 51 points, 4 points behind champions WBA & 9 points ahead of third placed Preston

We scored the most home goals, 58 & most away goals, 32, that season, with the champions WBA the only team to defeat us that season at Linthorpe road

We carried on from our opening day victory when after beating Stockport County 3-1 when this day 1901 we thrashed Newton Heath, later to become Man United, 5-0
The third season as a football league club was the 1st time we've won the opening 2 games of a new season

Joe Cassidy, who is to make Boro history in a couple of years, bagged another goal, a home debut goal, to go with his opening awayday debut goal, becoming the 8th different Boro player to score on their debut

Newton Heath Palis Dance was a bingo hall. The bloke who owned it lived in Manchester all his life but was Boro daft. There's a bit of useless info.

This day 1901 we lost our 1st game of our 1st ever promotion winning season when going down 1-0 at Glossop, at their ground Pyegrove

Glossop, a Derbyshire located team, one of the smallest towns in England to have had a Football League club & remains to this day & the smallest town whose team has played in the English top fligh, Joined the football league in 1899 & won promotion to the top flight in their 1st season, finishing runners up to Man City, sadly relegated after only one season

This was the third game on the trot the mighty Boro had fielded an unchanged team, after 2 victories to date, a 3-1 away & 5-0 home win, manager John Robson was confident of continuing the fine start, back to the drawing board

Over two seasons, we'me played 3 games against Glossop now, losing 2 & drawing the other, we'll make up for it the next time we face each other but as it stands at this point after 3 games, we have 4 points on the board, ok start

After winning our 1st 2 games of the season we lost our third game of the season away to Glossop (21st)

On this day (28th) we welcomed unbeaten Doncaster Rovers to Linthorpe road, hopefully we can get back to winning ways

Boro ended Doncasters fine start to the season with a cracking 6-0 win, our 1st 4 fixtures has seen us score 14 goals, conceding 2
Since we become a league club in 1899 manager John Robson's team have finished 14th, 6th, is slowly putting a team together to mount a serious challenge for promotion, fingers crossed

Todays goals came from
Abraham Jones, his 1st for the club
William Wardrobe, 2nd goal of the season
Peter Turner, 2nd goal of the season
James Tennant, 2nd goal of the season
Jack Brearly, scoring a brace to record his 4th of the season

Attendance - 10,638, the crowd were down 1300 from our previous home game

After our fine 6-0 win over Doncaster Rovers at Linthorpe road we're back on our travels again, this time to Lincoln City, a ground we won at the previous season (1900-01)

Unfortunately the result went the same way as our previous away game, another defeat, though we actually scored in this defeat when James Tennat scored his 3rd of the season but Lincoln scored twice to take both points

A frustrating start for manager John Robson with the following record

Played 5
Won 3
Drew 0
Lost 2
Goals for 15
Against 4

Next up (12th) 2nd division leaders West Brom at home a team who are unbetaen on their travels

erimus74

After the 1st 5 fixtures resulted in three wins & two defeats, 15 goals scored with 4 conceded & 6 points out of 10, Boro manager John Robson will have been quietly confident that this season his team could be making a promotion push in only their 3rd season as a league club

West Brom, who were in fantatsic form came to Linthorpe road looking to continue their great start to the season, with just the one defeat so far, when losing at home to Glossop on the opening game of the season, they have won 5 & drew one of their last 6 games, winning the last 3 on the bounce, we certainly have our work cut out to bounce back from our defeat at Lincoln City the previous saturday

Unfortunatly, we couldnt come back to winning ways & with our biggest crowd of the season, 15,000, we lost our 1st back to back games of the season & our 1st home defeat of the season too, going down 2-1
Dave Smith with his 1st goal of the season, got our consolation goal, John Robson has a bit of thinking to do to get the migty Boro back on track

erimus74

This week 1901 (19th October) seen the mighty Boro claim their 2nd away win of the season with a comfortable 3-0 win at Woolwich Arsenal

After losing our 1st back to back games of the season we needed to get back to winning way & not waste the good start we had to the season, Arsenal, up to the Boro game, were unbeaten at home that season winning all their 4 home games, we put an end to that 👍

David Smith scored a penalty to put us 1-0 up with his 1st goal of the season, our 2nd away penalty & 4th as a league club
John Brearly doubling our score for his 3rd of the season
Joe Cassidy making it 3-0 with his 3rd of the season

erimus74

Also the 1st time we played on this day, 26th October, when the mighty Boro claimed our second back to back wins of the season

The previous week we won at Woolwich Arsenal 3-0 after losing two on the bounce & on this day, we followed that win over Arsenal with a 2-1 home win over Barnsley, a team we have now faced at home 3 times since joining the league in 1899 & winning all 3, today been the 1st time they've scored on Teesside

John Bearley scored a brace, the 3rd time he's recorded a double in a game that season & taking his seasons tally to 7

Attendance at Linthorpe road was 5,000

Record for the season to the end of october
Played 8, won 5, drew 0, lost 3
Goals for 21, against 7, points 10

Promotion material, or midtable finish?

erimus74

November 2nd - Following our win at Barnsley last game in October we started November with an away win at Leicester Fosse 2-0, with goals from Bearley & Tennant for their 8th & 4th respectively, on the 9th,

3 wins on the bounce, best of the season

Boro looking good

erimus74

9th November - We followed the win over Leicester Fossee on the 2nd beating Preston 2-1 at home with goals by Brearley, his 9th & Turner with his 3rd of the season, following our 1st back to back defeats of the season we have now won 4 on the bounce & heading towards the top of the league

erimus74

After 4 wins on the bounce Boro travelled to Burnley full of confidence, especially against a  Burnley team who have drawn the last 4 games & without a win in 6
Burnley become only the 2nd team that season to score more than one goal past the Boro & the 1st away team also
Burnley continued their drawing sequence, stopping the Boro from continuing their excellent winning run when both teams fought out a 2-2 draw, as that man again, John 'Jack' Brearley & James Tennant, scoring our goals, for their 10th & 5th of the campaign

erimus74

This day 23rd November we created a new club record with going 6 league games unbeaten with the following,
Barnsley 2-1, Leicester Fossee 2-0, Preston 2-1 & Burnely 2-2

Which brings us to this day, the 23rd & a 3-0 home win over Port Vale, goals from Turner, Cassidy & Tennant, for their 4th, 4th & 6th goals of the season

Promotion to the 1st divison, in our 3rd season in the football league, is looking good for John Robson boys

erimus74

November 30th - Boro drew 0-0 away to Chesterfield, stretching our unbeaten run to 7 games, consisting of 5 wins & two draws

Boro manager John Robson winning manager of the month award (although the award wasn't around back then) just thought id throw that one in there

erimus74

On this day (7th) seen the visit of Gainsborough Trinity, who in the previous season we recorded our biggest win as a league club, running out 9-2 winners at Ayresome Park
This time around the goals were less but atill 2 points as we ran out 3-1 winners, with the following goalscorers
Dave Smith penalty, his 3rd of the season & our 3rd as a league club
John Brearly for his 11th of the campaigne
James Tennant scoring his 8th of the season, as the mighty Boro recorded their 8th consecutive game unbeaten, a new unbeaten record as a league club for us & serious promotion contenders, in our 3rd season in the football league, John Robson doing a cracking job

And the 1st time we won on this day so no this day thread 😞

erimus74

Well our impressive run had to end sometime, somewhere

Our 8 game (6 wins & 2 draws) unbeaten run started & ended against the eventual 2nd divison champions WBA

Losing 2-1 at Linthorpe road on 12th October (our only home defeat of the season so far) & ending on the 14th December away, losing 2-0

After 15 games our record looked impressive & sent out a message this new team is here to not make up the numbers, but make themselves a force to be reckoned with

Played 15: Won 9, Drew 2, Lost 4, Goals for 33, Goals against 13, Points 20

Still in a good position as we get close to the half way stage of the season

erimus74

This day 1901 2nd division - The mighty Boro played their 16th game of the season away to Bristol City, unfortunately losing this fixture 1-0, which was our 5th defeat of the season & our last back to back defeats of the season

1-0 defeat was our penultimate defeat & penultimate away game without scoring an away goal for the remainder of the season

Almost at the half way stage, manager John Robson is putting together a good team, the 2nd half of the season is going to be a cracker

erimus74

After our last back to back defeats of the (entire) season we face Blackpool at home at the half way mark of our 1st ever promotion season

Our 17th game seen the final fixture of the year & a chance to get back on another winning run

Manager John Robson gave a home debut to A.Thompson, registered No57 he made 2 away appearences the previous season, now the Linthorpe road crowd can see what our latest CF is capable off, which was a cracking home debut as he scored both goals for the mighty Boro as we ended 1901 with a 2-1 win & back to winning ways

We started the season with 2 wins, one at home & one away, we've now ended the year with a win, in between wasnt too bad either, with Boro recording a 5-0 & 6-0 home wins, with only one defeat at home, going into 1902 things looked promising for a team in their 3rd season as a league club

Up to this point our seasons record so far:-
Played 17, Won 10, Drew 2, Lost 5, Goals for 35, Goals against 15, Points 22 (2 points for a win back then)

erimus74

This day 1902 is the start of the year which finishes in our 1st ever promotion

After 2 back to back defeats we finished 1901 with a 2-1 home win over Blackpool, the new year started with another home game & another home win when we thrashed Burton Albion 5-0, our 1st NYD win after losing our 1st NYD fixture the previous season

The goals came from
Joe Cassidy scored our 1st NYD hat trick
Abraham Jones doubled his Boro goal account for the season
Peter Turner scored his 5th of the campaign

What a 2nd half of the season is to unfold, as the mighty Boro mount a successful promotion assault

erimus74

The 1st time we played on this day as a league club

Our opponents Stockport County were simply blown away, Boro are not letting up from our previous game when the Boro scored 5 past Burton United, this day the mighty Boro went one better, scoring 6, equalling our highest score of the season so far & extending our consecutive winning run to 3 games, scoring 13, conceding one

John Robsons team are certainly full of goals, it will have to be a well organised team get something from the Boro & more, to even stop the Boro juggernaught from going up

Stockport became the 1st team we done the double over that season

Goalscorers:-
Abraham Jones, with his 3rd of the season
Peter Turner scored his 6th of the campaigne
William Wardrobe scored his 3rd of the campaigne
John Brearly for his 12th of the campaigne
Joe Cassidy for his 8th of the campaigne
David Smith for his 4th of the campaigne
