Kevin Beattie made his Boro debut at home to Barnsley who wore our blue away shirts that afternoon, probably only brought their red home kit

Malcolm Allison made two changes from the team that drew 1-1 away at Rotherham the week before, with both Terry Cochrane, Tony Mowbray dropped & replaced by Kevin Beattie, Dave Shearer returning after a 5 game absence.
Boro winning 2-0, goals from David Shearer, 5th of the season & Darren Wood, his first of the season
Kevin Beattie, registered No550, only played 5 games for us, scoring one goal, an FAC goal, which incidentally, was the last Boro FAC goal scored at Ayresome Park.

He was never on a losing Boro team in a game he started with his only defeat in a Boro shirt came in his final appearance when as a second half sub he replaced Joe Bolton in his final Boro appearance at home to Derby County, we lost 3-2

You could see the quality in the player, even with one good leg he was still a very good player

Big Mals team

Jim Platt - 11th season as the teams No1 keeper
John Brownlee - 11th & penultimate Boro game
Joe Bolton
Mick Baxter - Virtually ever present since signing, he missed one game the whole season
Kevin Beattie - Class
Darren Wood - Class player, ever present the whole season & through the season wore shirt No's 3, 5, 6, 7 & 9
Mick Kennedy - Loved his attitude, hard player, through the season wore shirt No's 2, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11
Ray Hankin - Signed 7 years to late, scored 3 goals in total, one in the league, FAC & LC (against his former club Burnley too)
Heine Otto - Absolute class, our talisman, wished he stayed a few more years when Rioch took charge or signed under John Neal
Stephen Bell - Ever present that season, so, so good
Dave Shearer - I liked Shearer, that season he wore No's 2, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11
Sub
Alan Roberts - Debut home appearance

Our biggest home attendance of the season so far  - 11,787

Bobby Murdoch was dismissed early October,  Harold Shepherdson standing in as temp until a successor was found, which was for 3 games then big Mal was brought in
In an uncertain season when we re rock bottom & looked as though we were going to be relegated two seasons running Malcolm Allison steered the Boro to a safe position of 16th place, three points above 3rd bottom Rotherham (look at Chelsea who we played the final game of the season at their place drawing 0-0)

League Cup - We were knocked out at the first hurdle to Burnley losing 4-3 on aggregate over two legs

FAC - 3rd round - Beating Bishop Stortford 2-1 at their place a brace from Dave Shearer, after throwing away a 2-0 lead at Ayresome Park.
4th Round - Beating first division Notts County 2-0 at Ayresome Park with Ray Hankin & Kevin Beattie scoring the final FAC penalty at Ayresome Park.
5th Round - Losing 3-2 at Arsenal in the replay coming from 3-0 down & putting Arsenal under tremendous pressure, we drew 1-1 at Ayresome Park with Heine Otto grabbing a last minute equaliser
