Quote from: Nosmo-King on September 17, 2024, 09:11:14 AMThose with long memories remember how successful public ownership - or nationalisation to those working old currency, I offer up British Rail.

National ownership, national disgrace.

Those not having the pleasure of living under a Labour government before? The penny will drop. And probably sooner than Starmer could envisage.

Was British Rail that bad?

We have the most expensive rail service in Europe.. and it's not THAT good!

Was horrendous. Unreliable, dirty trains, strike action regularly, inefficient and loss making. Little/ no investment in rolling stock. Over manned workforce at York and Derby depots ( carriage works). A shitshow barely imaginable

Yet the nationalised lines in recent years have been ran much better?

Riding the old bone shakers suggests that there still hasn't been investment in certain rolling stock.. we still have inefficiency and the government has to step in to prop it up.. which suggests that its still loss making.. only the extortionate ticket prices go into private hands.. so we get hit with a rail service that we're paying left right and centre for and not getting value for money.

Train drivers being overpaid in today's world exasperates the problem re cost.

I'm guessing here..

Bus driver £25k?
Coach/Lorry driver £35k?
Train driver £50k to £60k?

How many carriages does a train have compared to a bus? double, triple the wages should be easily covered.

Plus how much more expensive is a train ticket compared to a bus ticket!

You're way out re train drivers. £60000 plus BEFORE the recently implemented pay deal. Indeed with overtime they will be nearer to £100k.

Ridiculous.

The ticket prices and number of travelers should more than cover it.

I can't believe that the reason the tickets are so high and the service is so poor.. is because of the train drivers salaries.

The amount of times I've gotten on a train.. which was late.. only for it to stop completely for me to wait for a bus to replace the train!

Madness.

Why is it ridiculous? It must be a tough job to command a salary that big but it isn't anywhere near 100k it's 60-85k depending where you live and work. I get paid 47k for keeping fit and travelling whilst getting half cut that's overpaid

Train Driver £24 to £60k
vs
Bus Driver £18k to £34k

Hound

I know 2 lads that are train drivers and both earn quite a lot more than the top spot quoted above, £24k-£60k are flat wage.

This is incitement in my opinion.

So they've gone from calling tory politions scum to now saying yea but, they're not as bad as the tories

Clothes donations is now not as much as paying £80k of wallpaper. Oh well thats ok

Ok thats cleared that up, 😔

That's the problem when abusing people who govern, or have a difference of opinion, there will come a time when your double standards will show & not very good

Clem Fandango

Labour are NOT the Labour of our childhood.  People can't seem to understand they don't give a fuck about the average British person.
