12th September - Incredible, since the 24th March 1973 when manager Stan Anderson brought David Armstrong back into the first team. wearing the No8 shirt at home to Aston Villa & which started his incredible, 356 consecutive appearances he misses his first back to back games

John Neal made the one change from the Nottm Forest home game seven days earlier when Mike Angus was brought in at No5 replacing ever present Billy Ashcroft
Billy Askew kept his place wearing David Armstrongs No11 shirt

The Sunderland game was to be Spikes penultimate league game he missed, ironically, the last game he actually missed for the mighty Boro was the team & ground he was to sign for the following season, Southampton 😞

Taking in to account, he played 99% of pre season friendlies, truly amazing, his consecutive appearances record will be there forever & a day

On this day we beat Sunderland at Roker Park with Bosco Jankovic getting the only goal of the game

What a player Spike was. So sad he's gone far too young.
