I've said for a few years that ID cards are coming,they'll sell it as anti terrorist and to stop immigration.You won't need to carry it but you'll need to produce it in certain circumstances.

They already have you digital ID, the moment you got a passport within the last 10yrs. The face recognition going through boarder control already has you for life.
