This day 1974 Birmingham 0 Boro 3

Thousands of Boro fans, young & not so young, have waited a long, long time for this moment to arrive, to finally wake up on a Saturday morning & see their team name, not only as a 1st division club (now PL) but also alongside on a level playing field with some of the giants of the game
24th April 1954 was the last time we played a top flight league away game when Linda Delapenha scoring our last top flight goal in a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal
15th April 1950 was the last time we played at St Andrews as a 1st division club, the game finished  0-0
No new signings during the summer of 74 big Jack kept faith with the team that stormed the 2nd division the previous season, stormed, well we battered that league, we were far to good, head & shoulders above the rest
We started life in the top flight away to Birmingham City,  a ground we didn't normally do well at, managed by Freddie Goodwin
Birmingham City who finished 19th previous season (73-74) should be a bench mark to see how far we've come & were we need to improve
Boro need had no worries, we continued were we left off the previous season by smashing the opposition, winning this game comfortably 3-0 & who better to open our account back in the top flight than Mr Middlesbrough, John Hickton, putting the mighty Boro one up, Alan Foggon, Boro's top goalscorer the previous season & hoping  to carry on that stat, scored a brace to cap a fantastic return to the 1st division & set the tone for the season ahead, we carried on from our magnificent 73-74 season
