Sunday afternoon football in front of a sparse crowd of 12,722 seen the mighty Boro win this derby game comfortably with Boro occupying a place in the top 6 whereas Sunderland were struggling at the foot of the table, opposing manager Terry Butcher needing to get his team collecting points to pull away

Boro showed there superiority almost immediately when after 8 minutes Craig Hignett put the Boro one up
Don Goodman fired the visitors level after 21 minutes
But within 10 minutes, John Hendrie had restored Boro's lead
Just over the half hour mark Paul Wilkinson, with his 12th of the season, made it 3-1 to Boro & thats how it stayed as the teams left the field at HT
2nd half & Sunderland were given a lifetime to reduce the 2 goal deficit when in the 54th minute Richard Liburd fouled Goodman in the box, penalty, Goodman dusted himself down, placed the ball on the spot & balooooooooooooned his shot over the bar
In the 76th minutes Paul Wilkinson doubled his account for the afternoon & put the game to bed scoring Boro's 4th, converting an excellent cross from John Hendrie, given Boro their biggest win over Siunderland since 1936
