Boro broke their transfer record for the 12th time when paying £55,000 to Portsmouth for George Smith.

Making his Boro debut on the 24th in a 2-0 home win over Oxford United, George went on to make 78 appearances, scoring his only goal 12 months to the day after making his debut, scoring our 3rd goal in a 4-1 FAC 4th round home win over York City on the 24/1/1970
