After knocking out first division Man Utd at Old Trafford in the 2nd round the Boro's reward was another away trip & again, first division opponents, with Boro travelling to Victoria Park to face Stoke City

Big Jack made one change from the team that won their first ever league meeting at Millwall 4 days earlier, resting David Mills & bringing in Peter Brine for his first start of the season

Good start as Peter Brine scored his first league cup goal, to double his career goals, equalising within 5 minutes after Mike Pejic put the home side one up, forcing a replay at Ayresome Park in 7 days time
