4th September 1899

Robert Page made Boro history on this day

Our second fixture since joining the joining the football league seen the mighty Boro travel to Burslum, Stoke on Trent to play Port Vale, one of  the 12 founder members of the football league second tier since 1892.

Manager John Robson made just the one change from the team that lost their opening fixture away to Lincoln 2 days previous with Fergus Osbourne, first of 12 Boro career games, scoring two goals, replacing  John Gettings at CF (No9)

But it was Robert Page, the lad from Grove Hill, who was to go down in our history books as our first ever football league goalscorer, scoring our consolation goal in a 3-1 away defeat
