Will Gareth Southgate make a good club manager?

When he was at the Boro he slowly changed the team he inherited to a team that got relegated with the team that was officially his, technically in his 3rd season, but that team was awful, weak etc

As an England manager he left behind such a fantastic record, that whoever takes over will need to win a trophy to better him, I think he did such a cracking job as manager

Now there is talk of him replacing Ten Hag, do you think he can carry his England role into league football, I don't, I wish him all the success he gets but international football suited him best, IMHO

Clem Fandango

I don't think he will do particularly well.  He had a bunch of good/great players with England and one system that worked most of the time.  He was poor at in game management (ie changing tactics, subs etc).  I don't feel top non-English players will respect him enough either.

He seems like a nice enough fella, and loved him as a player, so I wish him well but I feel he is quite limited as a manager.

Yes agree, could surprise us & carry & take Man Utd, who are getting worse season on season anyway (which is nice) back towards their former glories

Just think a more stable club team may suit him best
I liked Ten Hag & thought he was ok at Man Utd but they're on decline, Southgate, if selected, will have a mountain to climb to have them challenge top 4 never mind City, Liverpool, Arsenal

Too Much Perspective

I wouldn't fancy trying to manage that United squad if I was him. There's only Garnacho and Maynoo that's any good.
Look at Rashford. He's spent the last season moping like a spoilt kid. Can you imagine trying to get a tune out of him if you're the England manager who dropped him from the squad?
Could see Southgate going somewhere like Germany or the US, or landing a nice off the pitch job: e.g. the government's new "community sports tsar" or something.

Yes agree with that. Man Utd are in such a mess, which is excellent to see, I'd hate to see him go there struggle when a better manager would have done likewise, IMO, they may as well stick with Ten Hag

I think Man Utd needs a legacy manager.. someone who is gonna come in and strip the walls bare.. then paint everything in their image.

I think Southgate did that with England and he achieved success. He did it without ruffling any feathers.

Pragmatic.. great relationship with the England internationals.. plus a great working knowledge of top international talent.

He would be better going abroad on a less pressure environment build his reputation would have been easier if he wasn't expecting England manager look what happened to us when he was sacked people forget we went down hill he was told to get rid of the big earners as you well know if he had a decent keeper which I think was a week link then things might have been different the 2 we had at the time he wouldn't make them, number one just shows lack of confidence in them and a mistake not replacing them

Southgate got lucky with England and in fairness rode his luck that made him look quite exceptional results- wise.

However when you analyse the style of play we morphed from a team full of expression, inventive and with plenty of pace to a cautious, slow and ponderous unit not easy on the eye and frustrating to see such talent seemingly on the leash.

I think he would/ will struggle in club football.

Being so eloquent the media would be his best route.

Could replace Rooney at Plymouth next month.

Been reported that Rooney has an eye on Saudi and his missus is far from happy about that.
Can't see Wayne towing the line in the KSA. Starmer will have to be very diplomatic to drag Wayne home from Saudi jail.

For me, he joins the list of Charleton managers, alongside Roberto Martinez, Frank Lampard, Ronald Koeman, Wayne Rooney, etc, who inspite of their calamitous failures as a manager keep being held in high regard. Baffles me. Don't get me started on Lee Carsley...

Usual idiotic comments from over the road. Bottom line is Southgate through the riches of the game he has got - does he need to work again? I would doubt it.

As said previously his best option would be media work.

I think you'll be right there.

Another basket case of a club & another club I want to see falling, would rather he went to someone like Bournemouth, Brighton etc

Still dont think whatever, if he does, that he's cut out for league football

Brighton was an example, dont think he's as good, league football wise, as the present Brighton manager, or do I think he's good enough to manage outside of international football

Im not having a go at him, just a question thrown out there after reading the headlines in the Daily Mail

He done a lot for the Boro, player wise & speaks well of the club so he'll be someone I stay clear of calling
