Happy Birthday to AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND!!

Total assist king.. BORO THROUGH AND THOUGH!

Signed a contract extension one of our last seasons in the prem.. rather than going for the big bucks he remained loyal to his boyhood club.. rather than move to spurs in the january he stayed on to fight a relegation battle.. breaking his leg in the process.

Excelled at Villa, was underrated by Brendon Rogers at Liverpool, excelled again at West Ham and then did as he always said he would.. came back to the boro to fight the good fight and lift the club back to the premier league.. flying high in the premier league with premier league offers he came back to boro.

The fragile ego of Aitor Karanka meant that his wrist was slapped rather than being played to his strengths.. but we got there in the end.. and then the inevitable collapse and us utterly rinsing him again when it came to his contract. No friends in football eh.

Had a strong finish to his career at Blackburn with Tony Mowbray in the championship and probably could have still been playing of he had taken a move to MLS

The best player produced by our academy? The most successful? The most loyal? up there with some big sacrifices for the club he loves.

STATUE FOR DOWNING! WHAT. A. PLAYER.

Our best ever academy player

His sister, who is married to Woodgate, has a ballet school who my grandaughter attends & teaches her too

Great player first time round.

When we signed him the 2nd time I really thought he could be a Mersonesque signing in that he'd help us go back up but sadly wasn't to be.

I never got the fact he had plenty of detractors in our fanbase, including a couple of my mates...........if he wasn't any good he wouldn't have played for Boro, Liverpool, West Ham & Villa in the Premier League.

Johnny Thunder

Class player for us. Top man Downing.

He was living the dream and a local lad.. jealousy and bullshitters innit.

Johnny Thunder

He was still a class player second time around, only a bit slower.
That's why some teams had the sense to play him in the middle.
We treat him like a twenty year old winger.
