25th January 1975 - One of my favourite Boro FAC matches of all time

Certainly at Ayresome Park, when the mighty Boro cruised past Sunderland & place in to the FAC 5th round

Although its happened before at Ayresome Park it hasnt in my time going, or since, when both team wore their away strips, my favourite away strip & with MOTD cameras present at a full house Ayresome Park

In the previous round we struggled to beat non league Wycombe Wanderers in the 3rd round, which took us over 2 games to progress, with the reward of a home cup tie against our 2nd tier neighbours, Sunderland

The game started at a frantic pace & after just 10 minutes a misplaced pass from, IMHO, the best player to wear our colours Graeme Souness, who gifted Sunderland a goal start

Souness later made amends for his mistake when creating the equaliser for Bobby Murdoch to bring the score level, the holgate erupted, normal service was now resumed & 1-1 score as the teams left the field at half time

Twice during the 2nd half David Mills was brought down in the Sunderland penalty area, resulting in Boro legend King John Hickton scoring 2 penalties, which was the 11th time in our history that we have scored 2 penalties in one game, putting us 3-1 up & the game to bed

We showed our superiority, progressed through to the next round & TBH, we made the game easier than the Wycombe game

In front of 39,400 two big John penalties & a Bobby Murdoch goal seen the mighty Boro through to round 5

I remember that tie with Wycombe.

Remember the Sunderland game in the next round too.

That team line up is probably the greatest team we have had for me.

Certainly up there with the League Cup/European side.
