Boro, without a league win, or goal for that matter in 1985 hosted Portsmouth at Ayresome Park & in front of 4,622 fans carried on that stat as both teams fought out a 0-0 draw, we seen the introduction of Boro's 3rd loaned player & our 1st outfield loaned player, No543 registered Boro player & the 5th player to wear the No2 that season up to his debut, John Kay

John Kay, on loan from Wimbledon, made his 2nd appearance for the mighty Boro, his home debut & the same result of his away debut the previous week, a 0-0 draw at Wolves

John Kay went on to make 8 appearances for the Boro, drawing 4 & losing 4

Boro manager Willie Maddrens, our 23rd manager picked the following team

Kelham O'Hanlon
John Kay
Gary Hamilton
Mick Buckley
Tony Mowbray
Irving Nattrass
Paul Ward
David Mills
Heine Otto
David Currie
Tony McAndrew
Sub
Alan Roberts

Willies team escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth

There were some cold miserable days back then in an almost empty stadium.
I do look back with some degree of fondness on them though, a kind of twisted self-satisfaction that despite the rubbish being served up we continued to go.
