I do have vague memories of that saga. That is the earliest world cup I can remember.

People often forget just how close we seemed to be to signing him. John Neal was going for it.
The story is usually told now as though it was just a nonsense rumour with no substance.
"Remember when we all believed Houseman was coming. As if."

Who the fuck is Rene Houseman?

Never heard of the cunt

Scotland were one of the favourites to win it, ranked top 5 in the world that year.
Arrogance, complacency and poor planning did for them.
Open top bus before they left!

There's a brilliant documentary on iplayer, mainly from the fans perspective who went to Argentina. Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

Neal was a good manager - somewhat underrated and undervalued in my opinion

One of my favourite managers Nosmo-King 👍

Me too, Erimus. Very unassuming as a person but a damn effective manager.

6th December 1980 during a 10 minute snow blizzard at Ayresome Park we beat Villa 2-1 with goals from Dave Shearer & Craig Johnstone, the following days headlines in the morning Sunday Sun were "I wish I could keep these players", remember my dad saying, whys he said that, he doesnt need to, roll on back end of the season John Neal resigned, the Craig Johnston transfer was the one that pushed him over the edge

He came in replacing big Jack, a tall order indeed, yet he not only carried our good fortunes on but tore up the way Jack had successfully managed the Boro his way & changed our style of play completely
