Boro, who have gone two games without tasting victory, will not only want to gain revenge for that league cup thrashing but hopefully, record a morale boosting win against a team we very rarely do well against & record only our second home win of the season
Following their second straight defeat, Stoke, who sit 2 places below the Boro in the Championship & two points fewer, come to the Riverside for the second time in just over a month, having won 5-0 here in the league cup back in August will be smarting from their last Championship fixture losing 3-1 at home to Hull City, one plus for Stoke, they have a new manager, hopefully fingers & toes crossed it won't be a new manager bounce
Michael Carrick & his coaching staff have a week to tweak a few things to our playing style, the last two managers spoke in the media in the buildup to the upcoming game on how we'll play & how the game pans out I can see Stoke setting up similar to Preston & Portsmouth, they'll sit deep, allowing the Boro to have the ball, they'll be ugly, time waste & frustrate the crowd
Will he be brave enough to make changes, as much as they talk about us having a good squad with two players in each position Michael Carrick still remains loyal to the same starting eleven, unless his hands are forced, injury/suspension & know he's spoke in nthe media regarding not changing his style of play, I dont think he could or needs to but to be a bit more bold, faster on the front foot, camp in the oppositions half instead of passing the ball from defenders back to Dieng & slowly moving up to the half way, more energy is needed we have the personnel
Will we see the return of Riley McGree for Finn Azaz, VDB for Edmundson & a first start for Ben Doak ahead of Isaiah Jones. Howson, Forss, not to far away either, with Lenihan & Fry someway behind
Our three league home games have started similar, breaking in to our opponents penalty area early doors then with little rewards the away team starts to gain confidence & we sort of fall back & revert to a slower, walking pace, with our opponents breaking through at pace, happened with Swansea, Portsmouth & Preston, all 3 teams could have snatched victory.
Is Carrick protecting our defence more, with the slow build up to keep the ball as much hoping for a break through but then, with Barlasar rarely on the pitch we don't have anyone to pin point a pass & along with McGree,, most of the time out injured, who has the skill to go past players we become limited
25/04/1903 - Our 1st home league game against Stoke City ended in a 1-1 draw, it was our final home fixture at our Linthorpe Road ground before moving to Ayresome Park – Match report attached

Won - 32
Drew - 12
Lost - 10
Goals scored - 99
Goals against - 51

I can understood where you're coming from & if the fans see that nothings changing, same eleven, passing between the back slowly to midfield then the fans will become restless, the atmosphere will drop & it'll suit Stoke, their fans will pick up on this, very small margins I know but I hope Carrick isnt so stubborn to think its this way only
He's still learning so hopefully he picks up on this weeks training
Quote from: erimus74 on September 25, 2024, 06:26:52 PMHe's still learning so hopefully he picks up on this weeks training
He is still learning, and it's difficult working around I injuries and integrating new players etc. All true BUT he has managed 98 games now is no rookie. He should now be able to react to developing situations (eg in games etc) and change them. Trying and seeing the same thing not work time and again is frustrating and he should have at least a Plan B to turn to.

I agree, just playing devils advocate I suppose
I was thinking when we were buying these players & rumours of Michael Carrick signing a new contract & was hoping it would happen & happy it did
But the bottom line, new managers very rarely last 3 seasons at a club, unless they have something extra, theyre usually found out & struggle after that, fingers crossed he has that something special to take us through this sticky patch

Hey, this needs to be close to the top not slipping off the first page, 😢
Just listened to this on youtube, not a big lover of these TBH due to the same mundabne questions, with Carrick keeping everything close to his chest, quite boring & uninteresting, he must hate doing these everyweek
But I thought after looking edgy & nervous at the beginning, as if he thought the room are losing confidence in him that he can turn it around, IMO, he handled himself & spoke well
We're gonna have to see a reaction.. lets hope we see it on Satda. 2-0 to the berra

That New Years Day game in 1990 was one of the worst games i've ever witnessed - shocking performance
I'd like to see us score some goals like.....
Boro 0 Stoke 2

Yes that game was bad, very bad, I remember late in the second half Paul kerr, who was that would up with the ref when he gave a foul against him, Kerr physical picked the ball up & throw it aggressively in the direction of the ref, within minutes Rioch subbed him, we lost 1-0
During pre-season the talk seemed to be that Howson, at the age of 36, looked after himself really well, but his body cant continue to take the level of work the championship throws at you each week, would become a bit part player, needed as & when, which seemed a sensible option, keeping his experience to come off the bench
It seems his presence is needed on the pitch as much as ever & we still dont seem to have a voice in the team, a Lenihan, Smith etc
MCGREE IS A STRANGE ONE...WHY DON'T THE CLUB TELL US....IS HE FUCKING INJURED AGAIN OR DOES CARRICK HAVE A PROBLEM WITH HIM...EITHER WAY HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOLD...WE WOUJD HAVE GOT A FEW BOB FOR HIM....SIGNED A NEW CONTRACT NO WONDER...THE CUNTS ALWAYS FUCKING INJURED 🙄🙄🙄

I mentioned the very thing, for me when he's fit he's in our starting eleven every week, but since he's been here he must have been consistent for not being available, he's missed so much football, it seems when he picks up a knock/niggle he doesn't go missing for a week, month or so, it just seems he picks up a knock he can't shake it off & seems forever
Really hope he starts tomorrow
MASSIVE MASIVE GAME

It'll be a right kick in the bollocks if we draw or lose this one
Boro 20 Stoke 0
Thats passes back to the keeper. Well what else did you think I was on about?
If we got goals for possession, we'd win this 6-3.
Will we carry over psychological issues from our thrashing a few weeks ago ?
Are we up for the game today!
Will we see a suprises on the teamsheet, McGree to start, Doak to start, Barlasar to start, ELL benched?

Yes I tend to agree, just if he shakes things up a bit fans can buy into this two players for each position is believable if used correctly, not just to cover injuries/suspensions but lack of form
Sir Bruce following our win over Stoke in 1987
Apparently Conway is out with an hamster injury, we just seemed to be cursed
The next time Ben Gibson plays it will mark his career milestone of 400 club games, if selected to play for Stoke City today, quite an achievement
It goes without saying, well done Ben, but hopefully not a milestone to remember
I know my prediction is 0-2 today.i really really hope I am wrong. A win for us is desperate. So come on Boro get your arses into gear!!

Bad news that. Just can't see where we have any kind of threat at the minute. Would be nice if Lath and Hackney could find some form. This is the only league match this season where I'm pretty certain we're getting beat. Their new manager will have spent the last week doing his homework on us. We'll have the bulk of possession and they'll hit us a couple of times on the break/sloppy pass. 2 nil to them.
Clarke out too apparently another hamstring injury, whats up with that training ground

2 MORE PLAYERS INJURED 🙄🙄🙄
FORGET ABOUT GOING UP THIS SEASON...THIS INJURY SHIT CANNOT ALL BE BAD LUCK 😡😡😡
Didn't they investigate the training pitches last year because of too many injuries? Looks like they need to investigate the investigation. Something is fucked up.
This is too many similar injuries for it to be a coincidence.

More of the same BORO in the second half
Decent performance so far. McGree and Doak making a difference. Azaz hasn't been too bad to be fair and Borges actually went past a player. :mick:

Over the moon with that performance, worthy winbers with McGree, Doak & Dijksteel stand out in the first half, wasnt up to going at 12 but decided to get meself to the game & so glad I did, half way home from the ground, nice walk, a Boro win is the best tonic you can have
Dont think we had a player who didn't give 100%, cracking save from Dieng when the game was 0-0

I cheered when I knew he was in their starting 11 :charles:  :christian: :cloughy: :ray:
All the way from Colin Walsh, Ben Doak became the 45th different Boro loanee to score a goal when he recorded our 171st loanee goal

So did I. He's now just a low league standard stopper, only capable of hoofing the ball away from danger. It was embarrassing how poor he's become ever since being cut free from Daniel Ayala's umbilical cord.
Brilliant performance, and a good result against a piss-poor Stoke side
McGree made a big difference for us
Hackney back to his best
Azaz played well, but can and must do better
Ben Doak was brilliant on the right and can hopefully inspire Jonesy to better performances
That Brazo left back seems to be settling in a bit better at the back
It was great to see RVB back on the pitch as well
Thankfully we didn't miss Baldini at all
Two tough games coming up this next week.....we can win em both!

Agree though I thought Preston were awful & we failed to beat them, hopefully with McGree now back up & running, Doaks star performance, Azaz pinging balls around we'll go to the leaders in confident mood
This is the start of a tricky run of fixtures against tougher opposition before another boring international break
Not only a Boro win, but a good performance, every player played their part, unlucky not to register more goals
ELL's goals will come, he was a constant menace & so unlucky with his header that hit the post
Good result against an average side who came to play,I hope I'm wrong but I see us as a top half side at the minute, plenty of tippy tappy passing but not enough direct play when we're losing and times running out.

Agree with that assessment Erimus. He hit the post and had the keeper make a good stop. If he wasn't getting any chances I'd be worried.
McGree makes all the difference, that work rate and attacking intent from the left. We've missed him badly.

Totally agree, for me he's one of the most influential players in the Championship, he makes us tick, his constant moving around the pitch, his protection on Borges side, his one touch passing, then the goal itself with his two touches of the ball & curling effort on goal when the keeper could only parry into the path of Doak
Azaz had his best game too, may have been a coincidence mind

I can see where you're coming from, teams have benefitted when they set up to frustrate us with us failing to capitalise on our superiority then we seem to drop back & our game plan suffers
Agree, Stoke sort of played into our hands & unless we can overcome teams who park the bus we'll continue to drop vital points which could make the diference between 4th & 8th

That's going to be our major problem, we'll give the obvious promotion candidates a game but look who we've dropped points against already. Carrick needs to get a plan b for these teams.Possesion doesn't win games.
Wow, Stoke were woeful and the tippy-tappy shite they were doing at the back made us look like long ball merchants !!
Thought McGree made a huge difference shoring up the left hand side and Doak was positive in everything he tried to do.
Improvement on previous performances but without trying to sound glass half full, the opposition were dogshit.
