Let's enjoy another cup run
A bit of our league cup history
3/10/1960 - The league cup was formed back in 1960 when Cardiff City were our opponents in a first-round cup tie at Ayresome Park. Unfortunately, Boro lost this game 4-3 with Brian Clogh credited with our first league cup goal.
13/9/1961 - We had to wait another 12 months to record our first ever league cup win when we travelled to Tranmere Rovers in a first round fixture coming away with a 6-3 win, Alan Peacock scoring our first ever league cup hat trick
Gordon Jones made his debut in our first ever league cup tie & becoming our first league cup debutant which today with Boro lad Sol Brynn becoming the clubs 72nd league cup debutants
4/10/1961 - 5 hat trick league cup golascorers in total with Alan Peacock scoring the clubs first ever league cup hat rick when we won away at 3-1 Crewe Alex.
22/9/1967 - John Hickton scored our 2nd HT with a 4-1 home win over Barnsley
27/9/1994 - Paul Wilkinson scored our 3rd league cup HT in a 4-1 home win over Scarborough
26/9/2000 - Hamilton Ricard scored our 4th league cup HT in a 3-1 away win over Macclesfield Town
9/8/2011 - Marvin Emnes scored our 5th & last for now league cup HT in a 3-0 away win over Walsall
Two Boro players have bagged 4 goals in a second-round league cup fixture
21/9/1993 - Craig Hignett scored 4 in a 5-0 first leg win over Brighton
18/9/1996 - Our biggest 2nd round league cup win was 7-0 v Hereford with 4 goals from Ravanelli, one a penalty, with Flemming, Branco & a Emerson screamer, starting the scoring
11/10/1967 - John Hickton scored our first ever league cup penalty when he scored in a 3-2 defeat at Blackburn Rovers
Winners in 2004 we have played 5 league cup semi-finals along the way, winning two
After going all the way to the semi-finals last season & IMHO, we lost out big time due to the number of injuries & players missing that we failed to not only put up a fight to reach the final, but got a right thumping to boot
Discounting the second leg away to Chelsea, Michael Carricks first/second string teams have carried on in the league cup progress from last season with a thoroughly convincing thumping of Leeds at Elland Road & awarded a home draw against fellow Championship opponents Stoke City
This is the 3rd time we have faced Stoke City, first division club (now PL) back then in a league cup fixture, back in October 1973, drawing a 3rd round cup tie 1-1 at Victoria Park, losing the replay 2-1 after extra time at Ayresome Park
This is the first time we have been drawn at home in the league cup, excluding the Chelsea game last season with that been two legs, was 2022 with Barnsley coming to the Riverside & winning 1-0
We have to go back to the previous season, August 2020 for the last time we were drawn at home & won, when beating Shrewsbury Town 4-3
This will be our 34th second round league cup fixture, consisting of 18 two legged cup ties within that number
Winning 21, drawing 6, losing 6, goals for 68, goals against 26

Brilliant writing again Erimus I'm not really bothered by cup runs I see them as a distraction to the league but our recent form we could do with a win
1-0 Mighty Reds
:leo3:
2-2 boro on pens
Agree it's a distraction already that we could do without,
2-1 Stoke
Be happy if we progress on tuesday evening
We've failed to beat them twice under Carrick at the Riverside, hopefully 3rd time lucky
2-0 to the Mighty Boro.
:champs:
2-1 Boro.
Is the game on tv tonight?
2-1 Stoke - bit of a bogey side for us.......
9 changes in the line up! Clarke and Ayling the only two from Saturday
Really surprised Conway isn't in the starting line up. Strange one is this call
4 - 2 Boro in a goal fest
Pathetic defending. 1-0.
Finch looking like a fish out of water
sky plus has been shite since they started it ...laggy ,buffers , out of sync
That aside we have created enough chances now to have won it !!!
Clean through on goal twice, both chances fluffed.
Shite this, but making so many changes, it is no wonder.
Ah well...
Oh dear oh dear
Game set and Tony Hatch
Carricks team selection says he's not interested in this competition,,
Totally fucked this game has carrick. It's worrying the trend since the Leeds win.
Embarrassing now

Good,
It was a distraction last year, or was it the year before 🤔
Glad we are going out no I'm not watching it thank god I would have damaged the TV in frustration the league is more important

I'd be more concerned about our form as a whole recently. Its clear to see, some players are out the door by Friday, Coburn and Gilbert definites I'd say.

I think that's a fair observation. Engel looks like a player that knows he's being replaced too. (I know he only came on as a sub)
Every cloud has a silver lining. I am at work.
The chap Hamilton from City. Paid a fair chunk of money for him.
What's he all about ?
So far all I've seen him do is nudge the ball back to the defenders. Mind, pretty much like the rest of the midfield/forwards.
I am rather concerned regarding the rest of the season as it appears we can never play a fully fit first team.
We will finish top 2.
Absolute dogshit.
With just two games before the international break we should gone for it. We did against Leeds and we were absolutely bouncing afterwards - team and fan confidence was sky high. We can ride a wave like that.
Today Carrick threw out a bunch of kids in a disjointed team - no way we were going to win that.
Where is the confidence now? Yes the league is a priority but good wins in the cup build confidence that helps us in the league.
We continue to
- have no balance in the team with no threat on the left
- finish badly
- fuck up basic defending
Dog. Shit.

I've seen nothing from this lad yet. He typically gets the ball. Stops still. Passes it back.... and erm... thanks.
There's problems for sure. But not exclusive to on field.
Selection, tactics, motivation, ability to change a game schoolboyesque defending, woeful striking to name a few.
Organisation certainly questionable

And in doing so, disrespected over 17000 of us who tipped-up our hard earned to sit through this humiliating rout.
Not clinical enough apart from Leeds game. Very much looks like a training exercise these last few games.

you have been waiting for this result. I knew you would be happy. Why didn't you say the same thing after the Leeds result?
Missed the entire match & founnd out the score at ten last night, shocked to say the least
Our biggest league cup home drubbing, 😢

Your stupidity is there for all to see. Most people comment with honesty on what they see. You look absolutely ridiculous - top 2? This comment alone demonstrates your grasp of the situation.
It was a poor, poor performance.
Continue living in your dreamworld if that is your want. Others prefer to see and comment on what was a shambolic performance.

Any points on offer for mentioning the word goal fest !!
:rudi2:
One good omen from last nights thrashing, Stoke City knocked us out of the league cup at Ayresome Park way back in 1973
And look how that season panned out, 😉🤣
How can Gilbert have his right head when he knows full well that no matter how he performs at best he'll be on the bench v Cardiff City
Against Leeds his performance would have earned him the MOTM
Knew it was gonna be a bad night when I asked for a chicken balti pie.....bit into it and it was mince and onion, wankers

Not had a mince & onion pie in years, mmmmmmnn
I though a lot of the young uns looked well out of their depth.
Finch was played out of position on the right, had no pace at all and little composure for a striker.
Hunt had a decent first half but looked lost after they scored their second.
McCabe just disappeared second half, can't remember him making a tackle or interception. Barlasser didn't help him.
And then you've got Hamilton who did fuck all apart from missing that chance Gilbert created for him.
Maybe it'll be the kick up the backside we need.

Disagree about Hunt, he looked like a rabbit in headlights from start to finish. Clarke was being pulled all over the place having to cover his defending as well as his own. In fairness to the lad he never went under - which could've easily happened due to his manager's reckless team selection.

I think we need a big increase in quality from last season for that..
HUGE increase!
If we managed to bring in Philip Belling, Nat Philips and Will Lankshear.. in the next couple of days.. then maybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
