Title: Boro v Portsmouth match thread
Post by: erimus74 on August 22, 2024, 09:22:38 AM
2 league games in, one win on the opening day of the season beating Swansea 1-0 we then followed that up with a fantastic 3-0 away win at Leeds in the 1st round of the league cup & then typical Boro we suffered a frustrating defeat at newly promoted Derby County in our first away league game
All 3 games we could & should have scored more goals

This coming Saturday we face Portsmouth for the first time on Teesside since the 6th August 2011 when both teams played out a 2-2 draw at the Riverside

Portsmouth sit in 15th place with 2 league draws, they lost at home to Millwall in the league cup

Hopefully Jekyll & Hide Boro can produce the form we showed against Swansea in the first half & the Leeds game & put Portsmouth to the sword & inflict their first league defeat of the season

Not too sure what's the latest on McGree, whether he starts or not, or even in the squad, top player for us but seems to be another player, along with Forss, who picks up knocks quite easy
Boro fans will see our newest arrival in Tommy Conway, think he'll start on the bench again

IMO, unless injuries,  I will expect Carrick to stick with the following team Dieng, Ayling, VDB, Clarke, Engel, Morris, Hackney, Burgzorg, Azaz, ELL, Jones
Still think Dijksteel & Gilbert were/are unlucky to not feature in the first eleven

We've had some big wins at home to Portsmouth over the years, 7-3, 8-2, 5-1, 5-4, lets start the game with a bang, score early & go on to win the game comfortably

12/4/1925 – The first home fixture between both teams Boro 1 Pompey 1 – Saturdays fixture will be the 57th meeting between both teams on Teesside with the following:

Won - 31
Drew - 16
Lost - 9
For - 117
Against – 68

Home hat tricks & 4 goal haul

2nd January 1926 - Boro winning 7-3 when George Camsell scored his first 4 goal haul, the 5th time this has happened at home & the 5th different Boro player to score 4 goals at home in one game

6th November 1926 - Boro winning 4-1 when James McCelland scored his 3rd hat trick, the clubs 31st home HT, 35th at Ayresome Park & 16th different HT goalscorer to date

29th March 1939 - Boro winning 8-2 when Wilf Mannion scored his 1st hat trick, the clubs 51st home HT, 54th at Ayresome Park & 25th different HT goalscorer to date

23rd November 1946 - Boro drawing 3-3 when Wilf Mannion scored his 2nd hat trick, the clubs 55th home HT, 58th at Ayresome Park

Home penalties v Portsmouth

3/9/1949 – Peter McKennan the 34th different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 89th home penalty in a 5-1 defeat

16/12/1950 – Wilf Mannion the 31st different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 88th/89th home penalty in a 3-1 win – The 5th time we have scored two penalties in one game

1//3/1952 – Wilf Mannion the 31st different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 89th home penalty in 2-1 win

3/5/1966 – Dicky Rooks became the 41st different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 147th home penalty in a 5-2 win

7/3/1970 – John Hickton became the 43rd different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 157th home penalty in a 2-1

26/2/1991 – Gary Parkinson became the 60th different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 204th home penalty in a 2-1 defeat

2/10/2010 – Barry Robson became the 83rd different penalty goalscorer when he scored the clubs 247th home penalty in a 2-2 draw

Home debut v Portsmouth

2/1/1937 – Wilf Mannion drew 2-2
26/1/1938 – George Wardle drew 0-0 – 33rd player to only play the one game
3/2/1990 – Ian Baird won 2-0

Played for both teams

Joe, Joe, Joe Laidlaw played 125 games between 1968/1972 scoring, scoring 22 goals, after leaving the Boro he played for Carlisle & Doncaster then signing for Portsmouth in signed for Portsmouth in 1979

Mick Baxter played 138 games between 1981/1984 scoring, scoring 8 goals, he was offered a new contract at the Boro, on reduced terms turned down our offer & signed for Portsmouth, unfortunately, due to illness Mick Baxter never played a first team game for Pompey

Mick Kennedy played 79 games between 1982/1984 scoring, scoring 10 goals & signed for Portsmouth in the summer of 1985

Paul Sugrue played 81 games between 1982/1985 scoring, scoring 5 goals, & signed for Portsmouth in the summer of 1984

Paul Merson signed for the Boro in 1997, playing 48 games, scoring 12 goals, left the Boro in 1998, signing for Portsmouth in 2002 from Villa

Yakubu signed for the Boro from Portsmouth in the summer of 2005 going on to play 73 games, scoring 25 goals, left the Boro in 2007

Gary O'Neil signed for the Boro in the summer of 2007 from Portsmouth playing 109 games, scoring 10 goals, left the Boro in 2011

Christian Burgess played only the one game for the Boro in 2013, signed for Pompey in the summer of 2014 - The 59th player to only play one game for the Boro

David Nugent signed for the Boro from Portsmouth in the summer of 2015/2017 going on to play 42 games, scoring 8 goals

Matt Clarke played for Portsmouth between 2015/19 & following his transfer to Brighton he signed for the Boro in 2022, a big part & important member of our back 4 - Remember the good old days when a player would play against his former club & was given the captains armband for the game

Sammy Silvers is currently on a season long loan at Portsmouth & will be unable to play against us at the weekend

I'm feeling a bit weird about this one.. funny time of year. They have a great defensive record, they do well on the road and they took Leeds to a 3-3 draw straight out of the blocks.

Hmm.. 1-0 boro.. cautious win.. first half outside of the box banger.

That's a bit contradictory isn't it? Great defensive record, but conceded 3 in their last game.

They were strong defensively last season though, so I take your point.

My concern is regardinv Dijksteel, shouldnt have been dropped v Derby, especially after a MOTM performce a goal & should have been an assist too, he'll feel he's only getting his game due to injuries, not ideal for a players mond no knowing no matfer how he performs as soon as players are fit hes dropped

I'm not a fan of Azaz - he put a couple of good passes through today but don't think he is good enough.

Dieng had a shocker.

Engel shouldn't put the shirt on again - he needs fucking off.

Burgzorg is really frustrating.  He does some great stuff but it comes to nothing.  He had about 6 shots today blocked by defenders - he either needs more guile or to take a much a quicker snap shot.

I still like the look of Morris.

Conway looked lively and confident - he starts the next game for me.

Take away from  the game.

Azaz is not good enough in the 10 and will not score a lot of goals there.

Sloppy mistakes are costing us, both of their goals were gifts.

We're not a million miles away from being a very good side, a left back and perhaps McGree or Hamilton becoming a goal scoring 10 and we'll do damage in this league.

I enjoyed that. We have to stop the daft goals, which is easy.

For me Clarke and Ayling were outstanding but I will get hammered for this I thought Azaz was a good 8 out of 10.

Azaz took up some great positions in the first half especially, and must have played Jones in about 6 times, unfortunately Jones just did nothing with it.

I do find Azaz a bit frustrating though. He just lacks any sort of aggression

The only problem for me with Azaz great awareness, excellent on the ball no end product at the moment he was our best player first half second half we should have had Coburn on for hold up play shocking at the back especially Dieng for their second goal

I think both Portsmouth & Derby will occupy the bottom 6 places, both awful

2 teams we faced today Pompey & ourselves

Happy with a point due to all the possession we had, chances & the ball falling the wrong side of a Boro player in the box

I thought he was our best player in the 1st half. No problem with him at all today.

Azaz did play in some good passes, just like Dan Badpasser does. But he's got no composure in or around the box. He certainly not a natural goal scorer.

In this system, we need 10 to 15 goals from the #10 and he ain't gonna get em - I hope he proves me wrong.

He scored 11 and assisted 10 last season

Agree

Thought he had a very good game, think he set up Jones for the resulting penalty, which again asks the question, if everyones fit does he start?

For me MC cant keep dropping him when he's performed really well, to then give him 5 minutes here & there

Well to me & I maybe wrong here, but I got the feeling their keeper played the ref & stayed down after we scored to try & break up our flow, we'd banged on the door & finally got out just rewards

Could be part of their managers tactics hto say such in his team talking for the keeper to fake an injury to frustrate the opposition & fans, he certainly looked ok to me when play restarted & why did he remove his top, in the end because of his antics he was finally booked & then warned

100% their keeper did after our 1st goal. I was right behind it and he had a tiny graze on his elbow 🙄

Teams know you can waste loads more time with your keeper going down injured rather than an outfield player

They wasted time and got away with fouls throughout the game.  I can't recall a keeper getting sent off after getting two yellow cards for time wasting but their guy today should have been.

On about the 70 min mark the ref brought their captain over when he was talking to the keeper again.

Pretty sure it'll have been; "fair warning - next time he time wastes it's a second yellow and he's off"

That's exactly what was going on and why I said what I did above.  You could see it clearly on the TV.  He'd already been booked for it - isn't that already a fair warning?  Why fanny about giving him more warnings?

Thought as much, when I looked across at the replay, thinking he'd dived in to the post, realised he hadn't & thought well, whats he done to cause such a delay then he took his top off I was expected a change of keeper & said to my son in law, I cant see anyone coming on

The ref was poor & should have clamped down on his antics sooner than he did
Horrible team whose tactics are to frustrate teams will hopefully pay the penalty as teams are aware of their game plan

Big mention to Conway who could have been named MOTM with his short spell on the pitch

Could he be the replacement for a Chuba type, a player we have missed so much, we were so threatening as a unit with Chuba

I think his two cameo roles & not starting is to build up his fitness & once up to speed, judging by today he's not far away, having Azaz on the bench with Conway in that role ELL

I that Carrick had that for Conway to play that role

As I guessed,
Bang average today, gifted 2 goals to Pompey, at least the shots on target for us increased today, I think their keeper made a couple of decent saves too.

On last weeks (now deleted) match thread I wrote about 6 months bad luck rolled into 90 minutes and we saw another slice of the same yesterday - even acknowledged by Portsmouth's manager...

https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football/portsmouth-fc/middlesbrough-deserved-to-win-honest-portsmouth-boss-takes-the-positives-despite-more-late-agony-4755620

But my biggest concern is that we were promised a root & branch investigation into the amount of injuries we were picking up last season. Yet two games in to a new campaign we're already down to one fit left-back and one fit centre back. Hmmm.

Nice to read a bit of honesty, I agree & kept saying throughout the gane that we're just unlucky throughout the 90 minutes, along with sloppy defending

Was hoping Gilbert would have been given a run out, though can understand wanting to get Conway involved as much as possible, for me I would have kept Gilbert in, ahead of Azaz, following his performance at Leeds, think he'll be off friday though

Final minute & losing 2-1, no worries, back of the net, 👍
