Title: Middlesbrough v Plymouth match thread
Post by: erimus74 on February 21, 2024, 10:59:55 PM
First off, before we get to discuss Saturdays fixture, we heard the sad news this week thats more important than football, one of our very own, one of the biggest, iconic legends to wear the famous red shirt, best wishes to our former Boro captain, manager & forever legend, Tony Mowbray x

Can Boro build on their fantastic 2-1 away win last Saturday at runaway leaders & champions in waiting Leicester City with a thoroughly deserved victory.
Boro's last back-to-back away/home win was middle of December & with not winning a home league game this calendar year what better time then to put those two stats to bed
On the Leicester game, O'Brien was back to his pre injury best, great run & pass for the opening goal, McNair, another player that's been out for a long spell who just slotted back in as if he'd been there all the time
VDB just oozes class, he seems to get better with each game, Clarke, another player who was out for a long time & has come back to play consistently well & at a good level.
Silvera had his best game in a Boro shirt, lovely pass to O'Brien for the first goal & class finish for the second. McGree who won the ball & fed Silvera is such an important player for us, I really hope is still here next season.
Azaz two goals now in 2 games, both good finishes, hopefully he can build on his performances against his former loanee club Plymouth, you never know he could help us forget about Rogers, he's already scored the same league goals as Rogers so far, needs another 6 to overtake his tally of 7, his tally could have easily been double that figure which gives us confidence that he'll be among the goals for the remainder of this season & next

With Latte Lath & Jones close to a recall thing are slightly starting to look up
Though with Fry, Bangura, Howson & Hackney mow on the injury list, with the latter 3 out for what seems to be a long spell, the club's continuous bad luck with injuries has haunted us even before a ball was kicked this season, you would think & hope, that after what seems like 10 seasons of injuries in 9 months that going forward, we can think maybe next season the injury gods will be more kind to us
I've said this before & will say again we need to tie down Carrick to a long term contract, not that I have doubts about him not been here next season just for potential signings showing that he's committed to the club

In fact I don't think we had a weak player throughout, everyone gave their all & when you think, during our poor run of form under Wilder you could see the players didn't want to play for him, yet during our poor run the present squad are 100% behind Carrick, the evidence was clear to see against Leicester, which is good to see

18/12/1954 Boro 4 Plymouth 1 with a Joe Scott hat trick - First meeting on Teesside between both teams with the following record

Nice story
My brother-in-law, who was born in Thornaby, now lives in Canada, his dad once played centre forward for Plymouth in the early 50's, made his debut against Leeds United with John Charles marking him
The story goes when my son in laws dad scored his 1st of two goal John Charles picked him & said, good goal son but you won't get another touch, he went on to score a 2nd goal, Leeds won 4-2

Long after he retired & living back in Thornaby he went to Devon for a holiday & decided to visit his former clubs ground, Home Park while he was down that part of the world & so jumped on the bus to go to the Plymouths town centre to then get another bus to the ground, on paying he told the bus driver he's going to Home Park to visit his old playing ground, the driver recognised him, told him he enjoyed watching him play for Plymouth & took him straight to the ground himself.

Nice little story about  Plymouth Erimus

Season's more or less over for both these teams now. Ill go for the score draw or a narrow Boro win on a footie bet if I have one in this game.

Is this the game I was on bout last week where somethings planned . they all walking out

Great stuff again Erimus.

Sat in the Pig Iron talking to a few lads from Plymouth. They had a great night out last night. 2 weeks ago they were in S'land, in their words what a shit hole. No one in the pubs.

They are not confident, I know that feeling.

play one way ,get sussed out , you need another plan ffs. Sides now press us 20 yds from our goal KNOWING we will bugger up , this is as low as i have felt this season , because i know nothing will change , we will still just keep doing what we do regardless  at home   with this type of performance all too regularly happening this season , we seriously are back to square one now & its not looking pretty come the summer with yet another major rebuild required ......& prob VERY  limited funds

PPS Leicester City are 1/33 to get promoted. What's your point again?

Enjoy your Bovril watching dodgy Netflix.

The club needs a clearout from top to bottom.

From the owner to the "fans group".
Too many yes men and mediocre players brought in to replace half decent players flogged off.

Woodgate. Why is he still around? Is he the new Agnew?

And as for the "fans group". This last few days have proved how toothless they are. There is NO WAY Nichols will rock the boat if he gets the job. I have never known the board be so distanced from the fans.

Gerrard, Lampard now Carrick is making that list.

No excuses for today. Out played and out thought.
If that was an away game the players would pay the fans coach travel!

The biggest proof is Erimus.

When he starts questioning The Boro you know there must be problems.

Quote from: Blott on February 24, 2024, 09:17:07 PMYou get too high when we win and pissed off when we lose, try a more balanced approach.    Last week the world was a great place, arms punching this week the world has collapsed and sack everyone.    This season we made the semi final of a major cup, that alone makes it at least a 6 out of 10 season.

I agree. Plymouth had an out. A big Centre Forward, we are far too slow. I don't really do tactics I just want us to win.

But no one was moaning after Leicester City 1 Middlesbrough 2.

They were not , but that was because got lucky ,they missed 2 gilt edged chances 1st half , we picked them off  & got battered 2nd half but hung on .....that was away however!
At home we try & play out , they let us for 20 yds ish, then 2 or 3 press rigth up , we fuck up .....& their game plan is based on it ...because we regularly do it , our home record is not a fluke , it happens because we are not capable of playing this way , this set are not good enough to do it  & i fear the riverside is becoming a bear pit if we continue with a failed system at home

again I agree with you, playing from the back is OK, I don't understand why we do it 100pc of the time. But as I keep saying I am not a tactics bloke, if an ex England international and god knows how many trophies thinks it a good idea who am I to question. I don't tell the Dentist how to give me a filling. Saying that I can't comprehend the goalkeeping situation.

Look, we made it to the semi final of a major cup, we win big games but our home record is dreadful.

Football to me is getting dropped off in the Town, a few beers the game and picked up for a curry at 5. If I wanted to watch Premiership football I would get a ticket at Newcastle.

Football on TV is no different to watching Strictly, you only see 10pc of what is going on. If you look at the credits at the end you will notice an editor. They choose what you see.

24 hours on and I'm still seething about yesterdays debacle. Not since a Woodgate orchestrated, post covid capitulation against Swansea three & a half years ago have I been so infuriated about any MFC performance - and we all know what rightly happened to him after that.

The fact Carrick is STILL experimenting with forward positions this far into the season is staggering. In fact the cynic in me can't help wondering if he's deliberately playing bizarre formations - certainly at home - to try and get himself a nice pay off!

Either way, CARRICK OUT.
