Title: Preston v Middlesbrough match thread
Post by: erimus74 on February 12, 2024, 09:38:18 PM
Our poor new year form continues following our shocking first half performance against Bristol City with after only 17 minutes we found ourselves 2-0 down & totally outplayed, it didn't get any better as the half wore on & for good goalkeeping would have seen us go in 4-0 down at HT. Bristol City's manager changed tactics second half & told his players to just hold what they had, we huffed & puffed, with Bristol getting a few lucky breaks with good defending & lucky defending, then a goal that was wrongly ruled out & in the end Silveras goal, sadly should have counted, but wasn't & so up next is Preston North End for a midweek away Championship fixture, fingers crossed the right Boro turn up, take the game to Preston & get our second away league win of the year

Preston last season were our opponents when Michael Carrick made his managerial debut, when he became the Boro's 39th league manager taking his place in the away dugout, unfortunately, after taking the lead we lost 2-1 to a late goal & have been conceding silly goal ever since
I would like to see Hackney reverted back to his midfield role, with McGree starting, Forss up top, lets  see

8th March 1902 - Preston 0 Boro 3 - Our first away fixture in our first ever promotion season.

This will be our 55th away fixture at Preston with the following record
Won - 19
Drew -12
Lost - 23
Goals scored - 67
Goals against - 72

10th January 1987 - Paul Kerr, Boro's 1st cash transfer following liquidation, made his Boro home debut against Preston in the FAC 3rd round

11th November 1972, my dad took me & my younger brother to our 1st ever Boro away game when we travelled to Deepdale to watch the Boro win 1-0 with a John Hickton goal, it was Boro's 13th win away to Preston

Some who have represented Boro & Preston

Hughie Mcllmoyle
Gary Parkinson
Mick Baxter, £400k record signing at one point
Sean St Ledger (3-month loan)
Dave Nugent
Alf Common
Nobby stiles
Kelhan O'Hanlon
Dave Brown GK, both he & Pat Cuff rivalled Jim Platt for the No1 jersey, neither impressed John Neal went out & brought in Jim Stewart from Kilmarnock
Jordan Hugil

Only the one away hat trick v Preston

29th January 1927 FAC Preston 0 Boro 3 - George Camsell was the 17th different Boro HT goalscorer when he bagged all three, it was his 3d Boro HT the club's 8th FAC of which this was our 5th away HT & 43rd in total

Away debuts/final appearance v Preston

17/1/1920 - Wallace Clarke made his debut after moving from Durham City in the summer of 1919 lost 3-1
6/9/1920 - John Walker made his final appearance before moving to Swindon Town in 1921 lost 2-0

I fear another loss.

Selling Crooks was a mistake - should have been end of the season. He is a big bloke with a big presence even when on the bench. The season will go south from now on.

The new signing Azaz has been largely shite so far and needs to up his game, if he can.

We will lose 2-0

Leicester will destroy us.

During this time, West Ham will sack Moyes and Carrick will decide now is the time. We will end up in 14th.

Season ticket sales will crash, we will look to sell Hackney to raise funds but ultimately not bring in what is needed. Rough times ahead i fear and im not going to slag Gibson off, he is clearly doing all he can to keep the club stable. Unfortunately, fans want promotion over everything so disappointment beckons

Could believe all that apart from Carrick going to West Ham, theyre quite a few names they would consider before even thinking about Carrick

His best option is to sign an extension here

I hope i am wrong and you may well be right re the West Ham job, but, i do wonder if Carrick is thinking about it. If we do no improve whilst he will have to take some of the blame it only dents his reputation which is still pretty high, especially outside the club.

I could see West Ham doing it as a way to appease the fans who lets be honest no bugger all and believe a young, exciting manager who was a class player means success.

Dont get me wrong I want Carrick to stay here, I want him to keep learning here, I like him, his football, his attitude, but the bottom line is, we cant keep changing managers every other season

Another great write up Erimus 👍 Excellent again.I think that tonight the team has to go out there and show that they are deserving of playing for our club.Despite the furore and controversy over the Season Card prices we have to get behind the lads.I have bought into Carrick and would like to see him stay and build a team.I'll be there with the other Grandads at Preston and Leicester and we will be shouting "LOUD and PROUD"Going for 2-1 to us .UTMB !!!

Not sure why theres no Fry considering it was VDB who was the more shaky of the two on saturday. Not on the bench so must be injured.

No Barlaser - so that alone makes it a stronger line-up than last weekends debacle.

Frustrating as fuck when you're by far the better team throughout, with the only shots on target Preston had resulted in a goal that should've been saved and a lucky deflection that fell straight to the feet of their forward after our keeper had already committed himself. Not forgetting a turned down penalty that would've been given to a home side.

Our luck was well & truly out today.

Seen the highlights, think we've been unfortunate, not seen the penalty incident but the winning goal sums up not only our present form but our season really, their striker couldnt have placed tge ball any better if he chose to pass to the goalscorer with no Boro players in between

If Gibbo said that next season I'll guarantee

we beat the Mackems 4-0 at SoS
we'll get to the semis of the Cariboo cup and win the first leg against Chelsea

do you want a season card?

I'd say yes - on balance that's a decent season compared to some I've sat through

Oh & we can put the Carrick to Palace rumour to bed, they've only went & brought in Oliver Glasner, whoever he is. Always was lazy journalism

CARRICK WANTS FUCKING FOR PLAYING GLOVER AND PUTTING DIENG ON THE BENCH 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

GLOVER GOT BEAT AT HIS NEAR POST IN THE SUNLUN GAME AND DID EXACTLY THE SAME TONIGHT 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

FORSS SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYED UP FRONT AS THE STRIKER...CARRICK KEEPS CHANGING THE DEFENCE EVERY GAME HOPING FOR THE BEST 🙄🙄🙄 WOODGATES JUST SAT ON HIS ARSE TAKING THE CASH....THE JOBS FOR THE BOYS HAS SADLY NEVER LEFT THIS CLUB 😡😡😡

GIBSON NEEDS TO LET IT BE KNOWN THAT HE IS WILLING TO SELL THE CLUB AND IF A SERIOUS OFFER COMES IN BY SOMEONE WHO CAN PROOVE HE HAS THE MONEY TO TAKE THE CLUB FORWARD....THEN HE SHOULD STEP ASIDE....WE ALL KNOW WE ARE GOING NOWHERE FAST UNDER GIBSON AND HIS HANGERS ON 👎😡👎

As the saying goes: You're only as good as your last game - and Glover was our best player against Bristol City so rightly kept his place.

As for playing Forss as a striker; prior to last night he'd scored in three of the last four league games playing wide-right so why the need to change?

Personally, with no fit centre-forwards available I think we'd be more effective playing a 4-3-3 formation rather than Carrick's preferred 4-2-3-1. But there you go.

Just been informed Gibson acquired The Pheasant in Harome near Helmsley

Used to be a top notch place

Word on the streets of Helmsley is that it's gone right off.

I wonder if Woodgate is the bar manager ...

I think it's a transition season and was always going to be. Some deadwood out, money off wage bill and a push for the premier league next year. Well I hope that's the plan
