Title: Middlesbrough v Bristol City match thread
Post by: erimus74 on February 07, 2024, 09:36:56 PM
Next up Bristol City

City who are currently 2 places below Boro in the Championship, with 3 points between us both, although Boro still have a game in hand over them, arrive at the Riverside for hopefully our first home league win this year, law of averages, fingers crossed, it must come sometime, Saturday I hope

Our 1st league win of the year should have came last Sunday, but poor defending & a lack of concentration from our keeper let the mackems back in the game, not deserved in my opinion, but there you go, that's football

Hopefully we see McGree return & how good will it be to see his name on the teamsheet

Jones? Latte Lath? Forss? who knows, our injury just continues to grow from week to week

These games between us & City at Ayresome Park use to almost guarantee a home win, since we moved to the Riverside, not so. I remember two seasons running at the Riverside we lost at home to them & a certain Albert Adomah scored in both games, now he was some player for us

My team - Glover will keep his place, with Dieng on the bench, VDB to continue in his rightful position alongside Fry with Engel & Ayling
Hackney & Barlasar
With McGree, Azaz, Forss (fingers & toes crossed if fit) & with no one else available, although he had a very good game v Sunderland, Greenwood

Jones can't come back soon enough, his pace was missed so much against Sunderland that we can see how valuable he is for the way we play

As I was writing the Sunderland & now the Bristol City match day threads I got a bit down, not at the results against these teams but how quick time has gone & where
I post a ticket, programme, match report & realise it decades ago, frightening how quick time has flown, even looking at early matches at the Riverside & we've been there 29 years now, crazy

Then our Kev & our dad, two great, special people in my life, massive Boro fans, who are no longer with us, the 3 of us enjoyed so much going to games that Boro could throw at us, gone

Football is our passion, Boro & memories are for life

Erimus, what a wonderful post you've written. From the heart and encapsulated how both the Boro and your dearly departed relatives are so closely matched. Brought a lump to my throat.

Cheers teamboro, yes our home record this season has been poor
When you think everythng hss been against us this season that IF we were to claim that last spkt we MUST surely break our wembley hoodoo

Losing 40 plus goalscorers before the season kicked off
No win in our first seven league games
Injury list that has been nothing short of horrendous
Home record

After those points we're still in with a chance of gate crashing the playoffs, either the Championship is not as good as we thought, or our squad is better than we thought

Erimus and Smoggers I dearly wish that had been the case for me, but it wasn't. From about 8 we walked a few young kids from Berwick Hills to AP, normally the Boys End sometimes a squeeze. I had a great mam and dad, but it would not have entered his head to take me, the North Ormesby workers and Newcastle House came first, my mam was happy with her weekly bingo at St Alphonsus hall.

At the Riverside I often took my dad, with my lads, I never saw him happier.

After my family the Boro has given me more joy than anything else. I never cared who owned it, what tactics they played, who the manager was, I just love it.

Sat in bed with this f ING virus. Pissed off, coughing, miserable, throat full of sand, head aching. Oh and my fantastic caring wife is off out again, 4 lunches this week.

Agree. When I see the programmes on show and look at the dates it's difficult to imagine how far back they go. I look at the different designs and realise I have complete sets going back to the sixties that haven't seen light of day for over 50 years.

Big part of your history right there, going to the games, queuing for the match day programmes, finding out your have a programme missing from your collection & need to get it ASAP, all part of life growing up as a football fan, nice memories

I couldn't have put it better myself & to think, some of the vile posters OTR dare to criticise Gibbo, who not only saved us, but took us to heights you, I, smoggers & the rest thought we would never see, just for wearing a different tie, for me they're not Boro fans, we have seen world class players, good, bad & indifferent, memories, but our chairman is the one who knitted it all together

Totally agree with you Erimus about the Boro and Gibson.I never thought that in my lifetime of following the Mighty Boro we would play with the big lads (Premier League) and in Europe and have players like The Little Fella ,Rav,Merson and 2 of my favourite players Negredo and Murdoch !! As the song goes "We are Middlesbrough and everywhere we go everyone will know""UTMB !!
Ps get well soon Erimus and Blotty 👍

51 years today the same fixture, lets hope the same result

This day 10th February 1973

Boro 2 Bristol City 1

Our iconic striker John Hickton & 6 foot 2, eyes of blue Stuey Boam is after you, got the goals to keep both points on Teesside as the mighty Boro won our 1st back to back home games this year & two consecutive home wins for the first time that season

A measly attendance of 8,511 which was 2,000 down on the previous home game
Boro's temporary manager Harold Shepherdson, standing in when Stan Anderson resigned the month earlier, steered the Boro to a 4th place finish, too far away from runners up QPR but a massive improvement on the previous seasons 9th finish

No1 in the charts was probably the 1st group for me with this classic

Wasn't there a game at Ayresome where Gary Parkinson blatantly blocked a goal bound shot with his hand?

Ref didn't see it and we went up the other end and Rippers scored the winner....

I'll have a look on YouTube

Just seen the team. Dieng and McGree on bench.  WTF.
Will be the usual pretty football without a punch up front.  0-1 written all over it.

Ipswich are dropping off, now more or less in the playoffs along with Leeds & West Brom, 6th is, for me, the remaining spot between 6 teams, us at the bottom of that list but today they have to show that they want that 6th spot

I dont think we have any chance of making it above 8th never mind 6th place

Carrick needs to show he has it to take us forward next season, with no home league wibs this year & but for Gliver we would have seen our biggest drubbing this season, a sort of fightback secobd half due to City playing 120 minutes plys midweek & just sat back

Feels like we're back to Wildwrs last season & between Leo & Carrick coming in

All credit to Bristol City. Although it doesn't take one of NASA's finest to figure out the usual one-dimensional Carrick set-up, they closed our play down superbly from the first minute to the last. All after a tough 120 minutes against a proper team on wednesday too.

But remember, we're only 3 6 points from the Play-offs!

if that's a pop at me, fair do's, I am a positive bloke and you are not.

However I only ever played at a poor Teesside league level for a year and never managed. I look up to lads like you who know soccer inside out, have obviously managed at least at Championship level for a few years minimum and has the responsibility it brings. Well done lad.

He's done me a favour. I don't have to read anything; Pep, Klopp or Carrick ever say, I can simply come on here and read his deep knowledge of tactics.

The obsession with playing out from the back costs us yet again. Teams have sussed that too many of our players simply can't cope with a bit a of pressure.

Engel and playing out of position Hackney were the cause of the goals along with MC's arrogance or bloody mindedness. Engel and Barlaser simply are not good enough defensively. They are both piss weak and can't hold their ground nor can they tackle. If this is Howson's last season we we need Hackney and O'Brien in the middle. They both need game time to get going again.

Season is over and the transfer policy of wait until tomorrow won't wash with all fans. I understand selling our best attacking option with the money offered. I also understand letting tree 🌲 go but losing both is bad business. Azaz hasn't produced much yet and Lath to come back but he's hardly set the world on fire.

Chicken run les mis or happy clappy all is well.

I'd love to tell you it was inspired by you but I can be a miserable cunt all on my own 😀.  The blind, deaf n dumb optimism doesn't cut it for me. Fans are being fleeced again and the pressure to sign up to the £500 minimum season ticket scam will be on soon. Never been a season ticket holder and never will be. Walk up prices are a joke so Ayatollah Gibbo can do one. Bradford away and IPTV for me.

£10 a week or 2 pints of Guinness. About the same as the taxi one way to the Beechie. Not bad value.

I could go and watch premier league at Newcastle, but not for me I will leave that to the experts.

I am semi disappointed where we are but still quite a bit of the season to go, and on the possitive side a game in hand.

I like going to watch the Boro, having a few beers with people I know, talk crap and nothing that matters.

Then a curry from Colin Cheng, lifes a goodun.

Watch telly if you want, no harm in that but not for me.  Why watch the Boro on TV if you don't care, watch ManU

That's the spirit

Ratburger outside the ground, pint in the fan zone, settle down in your blanket in the WSU with a cup of tea, fight to get out of the car park before every other miserable cunt leaving early, phone in your Indian while you wait, home to Table Talk to pick it up and search youtube to find out which useless cunt was the cause of the goals we conceded, shout at MC and his 'not going to blame the players' speech, start looking forward to the next match.

Its always been like that
