Title: Port Vale v Boro match thread
Post by: erimus74 on December 18, 2023, 07:57:42 PM
After finally ending our 3 game consecutive losing championship run with a 2-1 win at Swansea we have the return of cup action as we travel to Burnslem, Stoke on Trent, to take on Port Vale in the 5th round of the league, the 10th time in our history we've reached this round
With showing no consistency in the championship we recently hit a sticky patch when we finally came in trumps with the win at Swansea, we change competitions to the league cup were we've been the opposite to our league form this season, winning each of tour away games to progress to the stage we find ourselves in tomorrow evening

This is the 5th consecutive league cup game this season, all away
Huddersfield winning 3-2
Bolton winning 3-1
Bradford City winning 2-0
Exeter City winning 3-2

This will be new ground for both teams as we haven't faced each before in the league cup, or even the FAC for that matter, the only cup competition we played against them was during our run to the 1990 cup final when beating them 3-1 at Ayresome Park in the zenith data systems

This is the 1st time in our league cup history we've been drawn away 5 games on the trot, 4 was the most, which was back in 2012
We've scored 307 & conceded 222 goals since our Cardiff debut cup game back on the 3rd October 1960

4th September 1899 Port Vale 3 Boro 1 - Our 1st meeting, it was the Boro's 2nd away fixture as a football league club , with Robert page having the honour of scoring  our 1st football league goal
This will be 17th time both teams have met in Burslem, with the following record

Won - 4
Drew - 4
Lost -8
Goals for -19
Goals against - 28

5th round league cup tie throughout our history

1974 - Man United home 0-0 away replay lost 0-3
1975 - Burnley away won 2-0 - history making reaching our 1st league cup semi finals v Man City
1991 - Peterborough away 0-0 home replay won 1-0 - Played Man Utd in semi final
1996 - Liverpool home won 2-1 - Played Stockport in the semi finals
1997 - Reading away won 1-0 - Played Liverpool in the semi finals
1998 - Tranmere away lost 1-2
2003 - Spurs away 1-1 winning on penalties - Played Arsenal in semi final
2012 - Swansea away lost 1-0
2015 - Everton home lost 2-0
2018 - Burton home lost 1-0

11th October 1967 - Our 1st ever league cup penalty - John Hickton scored our 1st league cup penalty in a 3rd round 3-2 defeat at Blackburn
3rd September 1985 - Last league cup penalty at Ayresome Park when Gary Rowells spot kick v Manfield Town in a 4-4 draw
30th November 1999 - Hamilton Ricard scored our 1st ever league cup penalty at the Riverside in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal

Played for both teams

Dean Glover
Bernie Slaven
Paul Kerr

As big a game as this is, its nothing compared to the Port Vale fixture we played against them back in 1986 at Pools, which for me, is the most important game we've ever played

Port Vale & Arsenal are the only 2 teams in league football in England that are not named after a place/town they play in

Port Vales ground was mentioned as the wembley of the north due to the size of the tunnel, are named after the valley of ports on the Trent & Mersey Canal. They have never played top-flight football & hold the record for the most seasons in the English Football League (112) without reaching the first tier

I can see VDB/Clarke as our CB's, with Dijksteel & Engel

The rest will be the players used to how we've played in the competition so far

Carrick said Hackney will be available before xmas, will he be making an appearance tomorrow night!

Connor talks well here, he's right, before & after he's a Boro fan, during the game he aint, simple as that

Didnt realise he was there till Smoggers51 mentioned it

Bernie Slaven is guest of Port Vale tonight.Must be mixed emotions for him.On a lighter note the Battle Bus has been renamed the Grandad Bus because one of the lads daughters has just adopted a little boy,so 5 proud Smoggy Grandads travelling to Port Vale shortly.Going for 3-1 to us .UTMB!!!

Glover
Balasar
Clarke
Fry
Latte Lath
Rogers
Dijksteel
Howson
Silvera
Crooks
Engel

Some interesting names on the bench

If Carlsberg did league cup adverts Rogers would get a hat trick to go along with scoring in each round & Kavanagh gets on to score to enhance his already growing reputation

Kavanah
McCabe
Bolongo
Nkruman

Comfortable 1st half I thought, Rogers goal was a lovely finish, hes either going to be a big player for us next season, or a frustrating one, hes got speed, an eye for goal, skill but his weak body stfength & at times, distribution, lets him down

I know we've been fortunate with our league cup draws this seasons but you can only beat whats in front of you & when you think in the last 5 seasons we've lost to Crewe, Barnsley twice at home & Blackpool, then that saying rings true

Never known anything like it, its horrendous, that list must start to clear up soon, surely law of averages

Makes our run to the semi finals & still in touching distance of the playoffs more remarkable

And with such a depleted team we oozed through last nights game as if a friendly match

On the plus side, Cartwright, McCabe & Kavanagh wouldnt have made their debuts

Cav may even start this weekend.

When you look at the experience of that starting 11 then they would be among the injured on the bench, unreal, I cant ever recall us having as bad an injury record as the present one, yes theyre part & parcel of football but with a thin squad to start off with
The geordies are complaining with a few missing yet they can go out & buy 7, 8 top class players in January, we cant

Agree with you Erimus, you can only beat what's in front of you mate 👍The ever growing injury list is concerning and as you say money is tight.I thought  Kavanagh although only on a short time looked a decent prospect.Time now for the fringe players to step up and make their presence known.UTMB!!!

Nothing to do with the players but the one big negative about last nights game was the heavy and high handed police presence. They had drones up and dogs and mounted police around the ground. It seemed heavier than at Leeds to me.

My son just texted asking where I was & I was delighted to reply, at B&M, close to the only north east team to reach the semi finals of the league cup 😉👌
