Title: Exeter v Boro match thread
Post by: erimus74 on October 30, 2023, 05:51:33 PM
Well this wont take long to write

With no football history between both clubs, other than a friendly played in the summer of 1994, there's no past history to go back, way back in the summer of 1994 when Robbos revolution was about to take off, Boro travelled to play a Devon double header with Torquay & Exeter, same as this week, Exeter & Plymouth

After our magnificent 8 game unbeaten run which unfortunately came to an abrupt end at home to Stoke City we travel to the real St James Park to, fingers crossed, progress to the 5th round for the 1st time since 2018/19 season when we played & lost to Burton Albion at home

On the other hand Exeter, who sit on 17th place in league one, have gone through their worst run of the season, drawing with Lincoln on saturday ended a sequence of 6 defeats on the bounce, infact their only win in the 10 fixtures was the cup win over Luton, in their losing run they scored two goals & conceded 14 goals, maybe the players mind were on the cup run & playing the Boro would create club history if they were to win, but with both Boro & Exeter having respective runs ended at the weekend I really cant see anything but a Boro win, home cup matches & everything that goes with it I still think we'll be to strong for Exeter & no matter what team Michael Carrick puts out we'll be to stonng for them on the night

The Exeter cup tie will be the 17th time we've played in the league cup 4th round, all the way from our 1st 4th round tie when we won at Liverpool 1-0, November 1974, with a last minute Willie Maddren goal a Jim Platt saved a penalty & not forgetting big Jack picking up his OBE from the queen on the morning of the win at Anfield
In our 4th round history we have won 11 & lost 5, two of those wins came via penalty shoot outs

Exeter have played in this round only the once, way back in 1989, the good old days of English football, when the then 4th division Exeter held Sunderland to a 2-2 draw, only to lose the replay 5-2

Haven't got a clue what the team will look like though I expect Jones (keeper) Rogers, Gilbert, Silvera, Bangura, maybe Lenihen & possibly, Matt Clarke making a long awaited return to football
Played for both teams

Jon Gittens - Signed for the Boro on loan from Southampton in Feb 1991 when he became our 15th loaned player, he signed permantley the following summer for life in the 1st ever PL & between 1991-93 played 27 games, scoring one goal & so import goal. After elaving Boro he moved down to Devon 7 after playing for a couple of clubs signed for Exeter in 1998 - 2000 playing 82 games, scoring 4 goals

Neil Illman - Between 1992/93 played 6 games for the Boro, no goals, he signed for Exteter from  December 97 to March 98 on a non contract basis, playing 9 games, scoring 3 goals
George Friend - Started his career at Exeter & between between 2005- 2008- he made 37 appearances, scoring the one goal. Signed for the Boro in 2012 making 299 appearances, scoring    10, leaving us in 2020 & what a player he was for us

Jonathan Grounds - Started his career at the Boro between 2007-11 he made 33 appearances, scoring one goal, his last journey in his career seen him sign for Exeter & between 2021/23 he played 33 games, scoring 3 goals

Another corker of a read Erimus...well done fella.

It has to be a Boro win - we can't blow a chance like tonight with a quarter-final at stake.

It's as good a tie as you could ask for - the lowest-ranked side.

3-0 Boro win for me. Wembley Wembley!

Bein sports 4 FR

Barlaser a liability, again. Looking forward to  a time he is not in the squad. Always off the pace, no defensive or attacking prowess. Weak in everything he does. Who ever decided signing was a good idea got it horribly wrong. We must have a youth team player who offers more ?

Well thats not what I expected, typical Boro hey!

Silvera has a shot & hits in to orbit, their goalscorer has a shot & it dips over our keeper
Silvera made up for his orbit shot when he nearly brought us level

Carrick will give them a talking to & hopefully they press Exeter more & do the business in the 2nd half

It was no coincidence that our fortunes turned when Scotts summer flops were withdrawn from the side. So no surprise that Silvera, Rogers, Latte-Lath & Bangura along with pass-to-the-opposition joker Barlaser have been dreadful.
Only Dijksteel could walk off that pitch with any credit.

1 - 1 Rogers flop 🤣

Agree with your point about Scott but some are useful squad additions albeit inexperienced and raw. Bangura is an upgrade on Engels which isn't saying much.

Struggling to think of a worse midfielder ever than Barlaser.

Only saw Gilbert for 15 mins at Bradford. He's only young but very lightweight. He's not ready for central midfield.

Glover is another one who should not be in the first team squad.

He has a point. Only Dijksteel played well. Even Hackney by his own high standards was well off his best.

We are buying largely young and cheap with some potential. Some will be useful additions some not. MC had to take most out of the first team to enable our 6 game winning run.

Barlaser isn't young nor does he have potential. Stealing a living as footballer who was at fault for both their goals. He has little end product and I don't believe the waffle that he buys others time on the ball. Needs to be gone from the team, squad and club.

Easy to pretend it's all roses but we shipped 2 goals to a side a division below us and never looked in comfortable.

That said we got the job done in the end. UTFB!

Only a needlessly given away penalty ensured we edged past a team who've just been on a bigger losing streak than we were at the season start. Once again, inflexible, like-for-like substitutions and keeping the woeful Barlaser on throughout didn't help ease the pressure.

Leicester must be licking their lips in anticipation for next week.

C'mom guys we won

I thought Rogers was going to be a long project, until the Sunderland game when he came on won possession & fed in Jones for our 3rd, against Birmingham he scored the winning goal, looked lively against Stoke, wasn't hard as most of the players played well below their standards & tonight, for me he, had a very good game & a cracking goal to boot

Silvers runs around a lot, he ballooned the ball in to orbit early in the 1st half, had a cracking effort at the back end of the half, scored a beauty goal but for me he's one who cant start yet, maybe in time he'll become a 1st team regular, but like Coburn still so raw, but going in the right direction

Don't think the keeper was at fault for either goal

Would it be the Boro if it were plain sailing

With a bit more urgency and accurate passing in the final third, the game would have been won by Boro ay halftime.

You could tell that Carrick had told them to up the tempo in the 2nd half and run at them more.

Also bearing in mind they scored a couple of wonder goals and we had quite a lot of decent chances.

Overall a good game to watch, a win in a tricky cup game and bouncing straight back from Saturday so a solid 7.5/10 for me.

Or is that too positive for the 'Twist on 21' lot on here ?

Thought last night was a great cuptie for a neutral to watch . Even though we went a goal behind I felt that we had enough in the tank to win the game. We showed tenacity and resilience against a lower league side who had nothing to lose. They harried and pushed us and there was some old fashioned blood and thunder tackles, but we rose to the occasion and contained them . Into the next round now UTMB !!!

Balaser is so infuriating to watch

He does some good things, good runs, good touches and picks a pass.....

But he also surrenders possession so easily and wrecklessly some times and puts us under so much pressure....wasn't too bad last night as they were a lower league side so didn't punish us

Agree with most of that. Where he excels is giving the ball away under no pressure or misplaced passes that were neither difficult nor intended to hurt the opposition. He's a squad player who is only playing due to injuries and suspensions or that's what I like to tell myself. As you rightly point out it didn't cost us last night. It did cost us against a fairly ordinary Stoke side and that's the concern, can only see it happening again.

Unlike Silvera and Rogers, he has no effective end product. Silvera scored a very important goal midweek which we needed and as Erimus pointed out Rogers now has a good track record of goals and assists. They both give the ball away trying to go forward or pass forward, goes with the turf Barlaser gives the ball away without ever making an assist or contributing to an assist. His defensive play is truly shite and his physical weakness is exposed time and again.

that's very true, I would take a 1-0 win, played badly, no positives over a 1-0 defeat playing the Christmas Tree formation and creating 50 chances.

I don't and have never cared about formations or tactics.

But, I don't turn on them after one defeat. Just have a look at the treads on each game, we turn on them if the keeper plays it from the back.

Incidentally something I hated however I listened to Woodgate explain why we do it, he was concise, clear and made me understand.

Quote from: Bud Wiser on October 31, 2023, 09:58:22 PMOnly a needlessly given away penalty ensured we edged past a team who've just been on a bigger losing streak than we were at the season start. Once again, inflexible, like-for-like substitutions and keeping the woeful Barlaser on throughout didn't help ease the pressure.

Leicester must be licking their lips in anticipation for next week.

You just hate it when we win don't you?

I say it as it is. You might've been impressed with what was on offer last night - I wasn't.

Time to give your rose tinted's a wipe, pal.
what was wrong with last night? From what I saw the keeper had no chance for either.

We scored some cracking goals.

He gave some minor player a game.

We won.

On the down side it's raining outside.

I explained it all last night. Read it. You just might learn something.
I somehow doubt it. I thought you wrote bs but was too polite to say it.

You prove to me that fans know nothing about football. Your going to say you managed some under 8yo team for 3 years.

Says the prize whopper we has previously posted about not being bothered about winning, tactics etc just as long as you've had a pre-match pint with your mates. Fuck me!
that's very true, I would take a 1-0 win, played badly, no positives over a 1-0 defeat playing the Christmas Tree formation and creating 50 chances.

I can't waste any more time conversing with anyone who ever thought a plank like Woodenhead came across as clear & concise. Good night.
go to bed and listen to yourself. Good night.

I thought it was a typical cup tie.
The underdog was right up for it and gave it a fuckin good go.
We were not at our best but controlled the game for long periods.
We did enough to get through.
