Title: Boro v QPR match thread
Post by: erimus74 on September 01, 2023, 08:15:47 AM
After our welcomed 3-1 midweek away league cup win at Bolton, 2nd win of the season, hopefully this will give the Boro a bit of a confidence boost going in to our final league game before the boring, boring international break when, fingers crossed, we can claim our 1st three points of the season & dare I say it, a cleansheet, with just the one league point to our name so far this season its vitally important we get the three points to claw ourselves away out of the bottom 3

At this moment we've signed 2 players in Sam Greenwood & Lewis O'Brien but not too sure if they'll figure in to the starting eleven, or on the bench, but one player looking forward to this fixture is our No1 keeper, Sammy Deing, signed in the summer from QPR

1st February 1913 -  Our 1st ever home fixture v QPR an FAC 2nd round cup tie which Boro won 3-2 with a brace from George Elliott & one from Edmund Eyre

It will be the 31st meeting between both teams on Teesside with the following record
Won - 16
Drew - 4
Lost  - 10
Goals scored - 49
Goals against - 38

18th March 1972 - Pat Lynch, who we signed from Cliftonville in June 1970, was the 1st Boro player to make a sub appearance then never feature again for the Boro when he replaced David Mills late in the 2nd half in our 1-0 defeat away to QPR

27th October 2010 - Barry Robson scored 2 penalties at home to QPR in a 2-0 league win , this was the 4th time 2 converted penalties in the same game had happened at the Riverside & 14th time in our history
It was also the 1st time in our history that we had done a league double over QPR

Only the one hat trick v QPR

26th September 1970 John Hickton became the 39th different hat trick goalscorer when he scored his 4th Boro hat trick, our 79th at Ayresome Park, 83rd home & 111 in total

Boro debuts v QPR

Pat Lynch 18/2/1972 away lost 1-0 - The 1st Boro player to make a sub appearance & never play again
Billy Woof 23/11/1974 home lost 3-1
Alan Walsh 1/4/1978 away lost 1-0
Robbie Stockdale 13/1/1997 home 2-0
Mikael Tavaras 11/9/2010 away lost 3-0
Maxmillian Hass 26/2/2011 home lost 3-0
Chubba Akpom 26/9/2020 away 1-1 - Scored

October 1982 - Since the dismissal of Bobby Murdoch, Harold Shepherdson had been in temporary charge for 3 games, leading up to the QPR game, resulting in 2 draws & a win, our best unbeaten run since Feb/March last season & sort of brought a bit of stability back to the team

With the Boro playing with more confidence, though still sitting in the bottom 3 & managerless Boro chairman Mike McCullock turned to his good friend Malcolm Allison to come in & rescue us from what looks like  a 2nd consecutive relegation fight, fortunately, big Mal accepted the challenge & became our 21st manager when he was paraded infront of the Ayresome Park faithful before the QPR game, then took his place in the directors box

Top of the league QPR arrived at Ayresome Park full of confidence & this showed when soon enough Boro found themselves trailing when  Allen put the Londoners in front & with us not having
the best of records recently against our visitors it looked as though its going to be a long afternoon, but our 2nd highest crowd of the season, 7,892, an increase of 2300 fans up on our previous home game were in for a treat as the mighty Boro come from a goal down to not only equalise through our talisman Heine Otto but to go in front when Irving Nattrass scored our 2nd goal from the penalty spot to become the 48th different Boro penalty scorer & the clubs 183 successful penalty

With massive cheers around the ground the ref blew the whistle & against the odds, the Boro had won the game,  a great result against a team we rarely do well against at Ayresome Park,  August 1971 was the last time we had beaten QPR on Teesside also, you had to go back to Jan/Feb 1981 to the last time we won back to back home games

I liked big Mals time at the Boro

Some players who played for Boro & QPR

Sammy Deing
Dave Thomas
Don Masson
John O'Rourke
Billy Birrell - Boro captain in 1926/27 when Camsell smashed in 59 goals
Albert Adomah
Emmaunel Ledesma
Grant Hall
Jonathan Hugil

Terry Venables & Neil Warnock has managed both teams

Our 1st 3 games agaisnt QPR were in the FAC, wiining 2 & drawing one, we have since met them 4 more times in the FAC, winning one, drawing two & losing one
We have also played QPR in the 1st (now PL), 2nd (the Championship) & 3rd divison (now 1st divison)

4-1 Boro. Confidence from the 2nd half at Bolton and the new signings will see off QPR.

Great nostalgia Erimus.

Little known fact - when I was younger and would wear football kits to play footie with my mates, the only other teams strip I ever had apart from Boro and England was QPR and can I fuck remember why.

For that reason I'll go with Mighty Lions 6 Fruit Loop Hoops 3

The 6 2 Game my mam gave me money to sit down as I wasn't feeling too well. Walked from Berwick Hills through Grove Hill to AP and back.

Got home, she rings the doctors ( those were the days) from the phone outside the Newcastle House, he turns up and off to hospital for 10 days with appendix out. She went chuffin wild with me for not telling her the truth. I said it was a cold.

Thanks Erimus, good stuff.

My only real memory of QPR games are the two FA Cup games in 82.
First FA Cup game on a plastic pitch I think. I remember leaning over the wall to feel it. It was horrible, like twisted elastic bands. Must have knacked.
Bobby Bloody Thomson scored our goal in the 1-1 draw and then missed a penalty in the 3-2 replay defeat.

I was going to say D6 when reading this thread. Murphys Bar and D6 was always the welcome back to civilization after spending long trips in shithole countries. All lads in there early doors with big fuck off smiles on their faces getting ready for flights back to the UK. Good memories but I couldn't do the long trips in shitholes anymore, would rather sweep roads.

3 - 1 to us.

My abiding memory is getting dicked 5 - 0 there in 98. Townsend sent off. The white city estate reeked of ganja.

Thats rjght John, we scored the 1st ever FAC goalnon QPR's awful pitch, Bobby scored after 11 minutes, they equalised late on

My memory relates to the 6-2 game! What a match! 2 down after 5 minutes then the Big John and Hughie show took over.

Little nipper I was on the Holgate. I don't think many believed our come back chances after 5 mins.

Not oh how we proved that wrong! Great afternoon

Inevitable what is going to happen to Carrick unless he shakes things up. He needs to drop Silvera, he simply isn't good enough, he is league 1 standard. Needs to go to a 442 because we are weak in the middle and light up top. The number 10 role isn't working out, Rogers has potential over time but he ain't Akpom, ELL looks about as useful as Akpom when he was played up top, and you can see why he never cut it at Atalanta. Be lucky he hits double figures this season.

GIBSON, SCOTT & BAUSER SERIOUSLY GO FUCK OFF!!

That was a shocking display today. Rogers can't hold the ball up as a no 10 is supposed to.Silvera was very poor today. The one positive I took from today was that Jones looks like he is slowly starting to gain form and confidence. The team has to get back to basics, why are we not pressuring opposition goalkeepers on corners. We seem to have forgotten the basic pass and move tactics. We seem to be lacking a sense of team spirit lately as well. After all that though I will still be following the lads home and away because it's the BORO!!!

Howson looked done in. Dont know what they see in Rogers. There are footballers in Engel and Latte just hope we see more soon.
Mcgree and Coburn perked us up a bit when they came on but i felt we were never going to score.

Daft little things like nobody marking the far post at corners. 11 players all in our half at 2 down.

And that daft offside thing has to go. Not raising the flag straight away will result in a bad injury before long.

Lets get some analysis

The first goal was a worldy form a lad that had never scored before and went in off the post. Score a minus for not closing him down.

Their keeper (Begovic) played a blinder (in the manner of Joe Clumsy when he came on as a sub for QPR a couple of years ago) and scored 9.2 on sofa score. Made 9 good saves from our 16 shots. They had 3 shots on target

Our shooting is at times appalling and at others unfortunate. Silvera must be wearing clown boots and Latte Lath has no left foot

Paddy McNair was atrocious again especially in the first half hour

The Referee was weak again - why did he have to engage for so long with the weirdo boss of QPR about a whistle in the crowd ( I didn't hear it from my spot in the WSU) Allowed too much time on field for treatment that could clearly have been given off it

Engel had his best game yet (7.7) may make the grade but needs more going forward

Jones seems to have lost all confidence to take a man on. Didnt even think about it when he first appeared

The two new lads plus McGree and Coulson added much needed pace and we'll be a better team when they all play. Howson has gone now as a 90 minutes force in midfield

Rogers is no Akpom in that role but then neither was Akpom in the last few games

Dael Fry needs to stop being a headless chicken when the pressure comes on - the defence finishes out of shape and vulnerable. Not sure what defensive system we play - is it zone or man. Dont think anyone knows. We had 8 players around the 6 yard area and no one covering Colback or three others standing waiting for loose ball around the pen spot

We have enough players that can perform but we need Carrick (and esp Woodgate to sort out the defending)

Don't have a problem with Dieng - can't blame him for either goal

As I've said many times this is a 3 to 4 year rebuild

We gambled with expensive loans last year which no doubt drained the coffers - we were never going to spunk big money

It is what it is - things will settle down and we'll be mid table

Title: Re: Boro v QPR match thread

The morning after, and feelings are still the same. You can accept a re-build and the vision going forward, however, we looked like a team out of sorts against, and lets be right, a poor QPR team. These are supposed to be the easy fixtures and yet we are rooted to the bottom of the table.

There are a few things that need to change, because it just isn't acceptable the way we are. For starters the defence needs to be sorted. Either go three at the back with Dicksteel and Engel wingbacks or go a flat 4 with dicksteel in front of the back four. Midfield, should be O'Brian Hackney/Barlaser if you go 5 at the back or in a four Mcgree on the left and Forrs/Rogers/Jones on the right. Coburn/ELL up top with Greenwood just in behind.

If we keep doing what we are, then it will only get worse as I see it. I can't see Carrick changing the system, I will file him with the rest, stubborn to the point of being sacked.

I understand the build and push for promotion in 3-4yrs time hoping the prospects by then are the real deal. However, the fans aren't daft and have been sold the dream of a genuine push for the top 2, which the club should have put right during the window. People will be cool if you tell them the long term plan and the short term pain if we started off badly. Yesterday was nothing short of shambolic and the punters will only tolerate it for so long.

Hats off to those who pour their hard earned into the club, you all deserve better value than you are getting.

That makes it sound like a worldly performance from Begovic. You would struggle to repeat the 9 on target let alone the 16 shots.

Im struggling to remember 5!

Will agree with their 1st goal. It was a beauty. Perfect curl on it you could see it bend in the air.

And i would rather play Carrick as a #9 than that baby giraffe, must think he is a Brazilian with his 1st touches, Rogers.

All the clear cut chances were hit straight at him. ELL needs to keep calm, he is trying too hard in my opinion and panic strikes. Look at Archer yesterday for Sheff utd, his first goal so calm and clinical, it really brought home yesterday what we are missing. Archer in our team yesterday, we win 4-2.

I was impressed by their manager Ainsworth. Up, down, shouting, whistling, kicking most of the balls.

They might not be a good side but you could see the players listen to him.

Cracking strike, Deing was wrong footed, no blame attached to him at all, or the 2nd goal either

We definitely need a strong defence we've been lacking a strong defence since Kranka days

I think a fit Clark would always start, and Dicksteel at RB for his pace. One thing is for certain, Silvera shouldn't be anywhere near that first team sheet, subs bench at best. Will be interesting to see if Carrick changes tact and works on something to make us stronger at the back and middle of the park.

Confidence? Played out of position?

Clarke played a blinder on his debut, then struggled the next few games & seems to have been out forever, with noone having any idea what his injury is, or, how long before he's at least back training

Carrick has to change his ideas of playing the game, its just not working, last season teams feared us before kickoff, we had goals all over the pitch, granted no blame is at Carricks door hes dealt the hands he's got with recruitment but just try & play to our strengths not persisting with a rigid system thats not working for us

Stronger under Pulis. We had the joint best goals against record in the Division during the 18/19 season.

Probably both seeing as he was the clubs best player two years running not so long back whilst playing in a back three. Isiah Jones took that that accolade for the following 21/22 season playing at right-wing back.
But our clueless clown of a manager prefers to play one at right-back and the other as a winger?!!
