Boro travel to the west midlands in search of our 1st away goal & points of the season, we're in need of a win to drag ourselves away from the wrong end of the table, tall order with our reluctance to keep a clean sheet be more clinical in front of goal than we were away to Coventry & at home to Huddersfield
I expect Michael Carrick will stick with the team that started at home to Huddersfield, maybe if Smith was to show any signs of improvement he'd be in ahead of Van der Berg
Bit of stats between both teams in these fixtures over the years
A big goalscoring CF when been the 1st time a Boro player has made 2 debuts against the same team, an end of a legend, 2 of our record signings have made their debuts & one of the best ever long range wonder goals
2nd January 1915 - Boro Scottish CF Andrew Nesbit Wilson made his debut in a 1-0 away loss at WBA, he played a full season before he enlisted to join the army for the 1st world, early 1918 he was injured in Arras when shell fragment shattered his left hand & was invalided home & allowed to play in Scotland, during his time there he continued to score goals & as the Boro still held his registration he was recalled back to Teesside when on the 29th August 1921 he made his "second" Boro debut at WBA in a 0-0 draw
3rd September 1977 record signing Billy Ashcroft made his non scoring debut in a 2-1 defeat, also making his scoring debut that day was Cyril Regis
3rd September 1977 One of the best defenders ever to pull on a Boro shirt & a legend of Charltons Champions, Willie Maddren, played his final Boro 1st team game
3rd September 1977 Another one from Charltons Champions team, Peter Brine who played his final away game at the hawthorns, coming off injured early in the 2nd half, he played one more game the following week, home game & sadly had to retire through persistent knee injury
16th March 1974 West Brom 0 Boro 4
29th December 2019 West Brom 0 Boro 2 - Ashley Fletcher scored a wonder goal, with TV pundit Ian Holloway described Ashley Fletcher's wonderstrike at West Brom as, "a goal he could watch all day & all night'!
Boro who have won 2 & drew one of our last 4 visits to Saturdays opponent, fingers crossed this run continues
The 1st fixture between these two team in the west midlands was on the 14th December 1901 with Boro losing 2-0
WBA v Boro fixture will be 51st fixture at the Hawthorns between the 2 teams, with the following record:
Won - 12
Drew - 12
Lost - 26
Goals scored - 48
Goals against - 77
A number of players who played for both team
David Mills: Played for the Boro in two separate spells, 1st spell between 1968-1979, playing 296 games & scoring 76 goals, he scored the only goal at Luton in 1974 to clinch the Boro the 2nd Championship, he asked for a transfer in 76 & the club put a £200k transfer fee on him, there were no takers, he eventually moved to WBA in 79, Ron Atkinson paying an English transfer fee of £500k & between 1979 -82 he played 59 games scoring 6 goals for West Brom. The late, great Willie Maddren re-signed DM for the Boro for season 1984-85 where he played 32 games, scoring 14 goals.
Bryan Robson: Robbo played 198 games for West Brom scoring 40 goals, he then signed for Man United where he stayed until 1994 when the chance to become player manager at the Boro was too good an opportunity for him & signed for the Boro between 1995 -2001, playing 28 games & scoring one goal, a thunder bolt at the east end seats of AP against Port Vale. BR brought something to the club that, as a long serving fan, I thought I would never see following my club, playing in a major cup final at Wembley, whatever the results he gave us all dreams
Tony Mowbray: Mogga played 348 games between1982-1991 for Boro scoring 25 goals, September 1982 Willie Maddren gave Mowbray his debut away to Newcastle, his role was to man mark Kevin Keegan, it worked, KK didn't score & we come away with a 1-1 draw. Mowbary left the Boro for Celtic & once his playing career was over managed a few team, WBA being one of them, he returned to the Boro as manager between 2010 -2013
James Morrison: Played 66 games for the Boro between 2004-07 scoring 3 goals, his claim to fame, on the 30 September 2004 in a UEFA Cup tie, away at Banik Ostrava & making his EUFA cup debut, he scored the Boro's 1st ever away goal in our UEFA cup campaign. Morrison started for Middlesbrough in the 2006 UEFA Cup Final against Sevilla. In 2007 he left the Boro for WBA for £1.5M & to date played 254 games, scoring 28 goals, he got sent off in an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Manchester United for a kick out at Cristiano Ronaldo.
Jonathan Greening: Played 99 games for the Boro, between 2001-2004 scoring 4 goals, he signed for the Boro along with a united teammate of his, Mark Wilson, for a combined fee of £3M, he was voted Club player of the Year for 2002–03 and also selected for the full England squad (though he didn't play). JG signed for WBA & between 2004-2010 played 196 games, scoring 7 goals.
Chris Brunt: at the Boro between 2002-2004 never got any game time, after a few seasons at Sheff Weds he was transferred to WBA in 2007, where he is still playing, CB has played 286 games, scoring 39 goals.
Alan Miller, our 42nd different goalkeeper played 62 times for the Boro between 1994 & 1997, Alan had 3 separate spells at WBA, a loan spell before joining the Boro & while at the Boro he went to WBA on loan before signing permanently in 1997, playing a total of 108 games
Jordan Hugill played 37 games for us on loan in 2018-19, 20 gams for West Brom in 2021-22 season

BAGGIES 3 BORO 1 😞😞😞
LIKE I SAID THERE'S SOMETHING NOT RIGHT AT THE CLUB AND I DON'T FEEL CARRICK IS A TOO HAPPY CHAPPY 👎
Good stuff Erimus.
One of my favourite Boro/WBA memories is when Tony McAndrew's leg fell off but he bandaged it up then came back on to help see out a 1-0 victory.
FA Cup 4th round, 1981.

Yep remember that well
1st half WBA keeper Godden dived over a daisy cutter from Ian Bailey at the holgate end, the bal somehow went under the keepers body
2nd hald with us holding on for a 1-0 win & West Brom coming more in to the game Tony Godden sort of paid a bit back when saving David Armstrong penalty, fortunatly we held on & progressed to the next round
Dave Hodgson in the holgate end too, serving a one game suspension
Can't see anything else but a home win I'm afraid lads

Good play, should have scored there
More clinical in front of goal & I can see us winning here
Rogers struggling here
We seriously need to replace Howson with a destroyer in the middle of the park.
Lenihan and Fry need a fuckin good boot up the arse too.
Come on ye cunts.
:leo1:
The 1st shouldnt have been allowed, pushed Howson in the back to gain an advantage, 2nd goal we looked so poor in the middle, like a knife through butter, yet as bad as those two goals were, we could have gone in level if Latte had showed more composure after nice footwork
Still goals in this game, what end is anyones guess
ROGERS IS A FUCKING HEADLESS FUCKING CHICKEN 😡😡😡😡😡

So will the penny finally drop with regards to the ludicrous way this idiot manager sets up defensively? I suspect not!
Its still August yet we're already in a relegation battle. And when you've got Bryan Robson MkII at the helm, things aren't going to improve any time soon.
4 games, bottom of the league, gifted them at least 2 goals, weak as jelly through the middle, awful, awful defending & lets be honest here, we have been for a long time
Add to that, teams will be aware of how little fight we have in us, then I cant see anything positive for us this season, if we continue in this vein then we'll be looking for another manager
Totally gutted, I honestly cant see us bringing anyone in to plug our weakness & move us forward, 9 months fighting relegation
:wankers:
Third from bottom.
:bigjack
With us scoring so many goals last season it masked how poor we are defensively, today we had opportunities to score one, or two more when we were 3-1 down, didnt capitalise, then handed a chance with a penalty only to fall to another sucker punch 4th goal

As I mentioned on here last week; Only Swansea out of the top 14 in last seasons Championship conceded more than us. Yet as the transfer window went on we got weaker and weaker. Fucking scandalous!!
I will have to put this phone down & chill out in the back garden but dear me, that was awful
We havent won since beating Hull 3-1 last season, defensively we HAVE to improve, if we dont then we will be fighting relegation, no clean sheet all season & TBH, how many goals have we conceded that were preventable, 2 at Coventry, 3 today, an OG v Huddersfield
Fans shat on all the time by the club. The only constant with club is the chairman, who should have sought investment years ago. Carrick isn't completely blameless, we've seen what he can do with a decent set of players at his disposal. The defence is a shambles, fry and lenihan in the centre isn't working, and the midfield is weak as piss. I just can't see us bringing in the quality that is needed or we would have done that by now. The club has shopped in the bargain bucket in poundland, and we are seeing the results of this. IF this is what Carrick has to work with after the window closes, then I wouldn't blame him if he walked away. The club will kill his Managerial career before it has really started. Gibson, your pride should never hold the club back.
Not going to win until we sort that defence out - mind you if you shop at Poundland expect a few Poundland results. 5 quality players have left the club since last season and we haven't replaced them, that's why we're in the shit right now - over to you Little Napoleon

I think its more down to his sheer incompetence than pride thats holding the club back - his off-field appointments especially. For instance, I listened to Marco Gabbiadini on Radio Newcastle's weekday evening football show a couple of months ago stating that our wage bill was £300 grand
a week higher than Sunderland's! Thats staggering.
So he could at least try getting some fans back on board by chasing Bausor & Scott for a start before the rot becomes terminal.

I heard it last night, couldn't believe he was saying what he was saying. Again, if we don't sign 4 high end champo standard players this week, that go straight into the team, then I fear for Carrick. Every fucking year we are playing catch up because we are piss poor behind the scenes. The club doesn't deserve the die hards who pump their hard earned year after year.
How strange is football & how we as fans look at it, when we were strtruggling at the foot of the table under Woodgate & he said, "the table was lying" he got pelters, now its a case of its ok, we're lucky to have Carrick
That maybe the case, time will tell but I wasnt encouraged how easy West Brom just cut through us & I dont consider them one of the top 6 teams
Ton.
Again.
