Title: Boro v Millwall Matchday Thread Written By Erimus74
Post by: erimus74 on July 30, 2023, 08:18:46 PM
Saturday 5th August, kick off 15:00 Hrs at the Riverside Stadium... Welcome to our 1st Red Roar match day thread of the season

In our proud history we've started the season 59 times with a home game, 24 of those were home wins, our  last opening home win was 9th August 2014 beating Birmingham 2-0

This season will be our 115th season in the football league, 50 of those seasons spent in the second tier, previously named the 2nd division, 1st division & now, the Championship & in that time, the club have seen 11 promotions & 11 relegation's with just under 1,000 registered Boro 1st team players who have represented the mighty Boro throughout that period
Maybe on Saturday the 1,000 figure will be passed

The last time we won promotion back to the PL (2015/16) we spent 7 consecutive seasons in the Championship, next season will be our 7th consecutive season in the Championship, add to that, it's 50 years since Charltons Champions (1973/74) stormed away with the 2nd division championship, what better incentive for the club & fans, to celebrate our finest team & manager than see Michael Carrick & Johnathan Woodgate take us back in to the PL

After last seasons heartbreak when our magnificent run seen us climb from 3rd bottom in October, when Michael Carrick arrived, following the sacking of Wilder, to seriously challenge the top 2, only to fall away at the worst possible time
With Michael Carrick & Johnathan Woodgate having a full summer to work on their plans, players brought in, it will be interesting to see how we'll set up, our formation, playing style & hopefully, look forward to the new season with excitement

The seasons curtain raiser v Millwall with, possibly, 2 former Boro players in their starting line up, the invisible George Saville & the never say die, Duncan Watmore

5th August is not the earliest we have started a season in our history, 3 earlier dates were played
30th July 2022  -    WBA home
2nd August 2019  - Luton away
3rd August 2013 -  Leicester City home

We have faced Millwall 3 times on the opening day of the season
15th August 1987 drawing 1-1 at Ayresome Park
17th August 1991 winning 1-0 at Ayresome Park
4th August 2018 drawing 2-2 at the New Den

12th August 1969 winning 3-1 at Ayresome Park - It was our 1st home game, but 2nd game of the season

Recording a double over Millwall in 1973/74 & 2014/15

During our history we've enjoyed some big games against Saturday opponents, some of our mature Boro fans, me included, will remember:

8th February 1972, my 2nd ever FAC match, 4th round replay, after throwing away a 2-0 lead at the Den with 5 minutes to go. 3 days later, on a Tuesday night in front of 36,489, Boro won the replay at Ayresome Park with John Hickton scoring a re-taken penalty after Millwall keeper dared to saved big John's spot kick, JH re-took the kick, scoring our 9th FAC penalty, normal service was resumed

26th April 1986 our final home fixture at Ayresome Park before liquidation, in front of 5,484, seen the Boro win 3-0 with Brian Laws scoring our 3rd goal, a thunderous 25 yarder

29th October 1988 before kick off Peter Davenport had agreed to sign for the Boro after (unlucky for us) turning down an approach from Aston Villa, the atmosphere leading up to kickoff was excellent as unbeaten Millwall came to the Boro in a 1st division (now PL) clash, before football was invented actually
In this end to end match, Boro went 1-0 up,  then finding ourselves losing 2-1 at the interval, 2nd half seen the mighty Boro take full control, as we drew level, went infront & then put the game to bed   Boro 4 Millwall 2
A typical Bruce Rioch Boro game during that excellent era, which had everything, Gary Hamilton v Trevor Hurlock

13th October 1990 - Who can forget, Bruce Rioch's 1st return as an opposing manager, when again, unbeaten Millwall arrived at Ayresome Park. Boro were one up & defending our box when Boro legend, Robbie Mustoe, played the ball to John Hendrie just outside our box, John just ran & ran, running almost the full length of the pitch to score at the Holgate end. Boro winning 2-1

15/1/1913 - 1st fixture between Boro & Millwall on Teesside with the Boro winning 4-1
Boro v Millwall fixture will be the 31st fixture on Teesside on between the 2 teams with the following record:

Won - 18
Drew - 8
Lost  - 4
Goals scored - 52
Goals against - 23

Sorry Erimus, I'm not happy.

- Wrong font used. How are deaf people suppose to read it?
- You didn't break it down into an endless stream of smaller, unrelated posts.
- All of the information was relevant.
- No pathetic attempts to be funny or controversial.

And worse of all.....

- No mention of Nottingham Forest or Notts County 😡

Only joking 🙂

Regardless of who willbe in goal between the 3 keepers, Dieng, Glover or James, it will be a debutant in goal & our 84th registered 84th 1st team keeper all the way from George Edward Smith who played in goal in our 1st ever league game

Agree apart from Rogers - thought he battled quite well especially when he dropped a bit deeper

The other two should be binned off and you can add Barlaser into that as well

Rotherham had our fucking eyes out when we paid for those two slow cunts

Daft bloody Dana Malt said keep the team for Huddersfield - that's the last thing MC should do - he needs to experiment. Keeping the same will only confirm how shite they are.

Yeah Coulson was shite as well

Title: Re: Boro v Millwall Matchday Thread Written By Erimus74
Post by: erimus74 on August 05, 2023, 06:15:30 PM
Thought we got off lightly TBH, Millwall could really have won that game comfortably, they had a good few chances in both halves

Both full backs were awful, Coulson looks the shadow of the player we seen when here a few years back, the least said about McNair in that role the better, he gave the ball away inside the 1st 2 minutes & dropped a massive clanger leading up to their goal & what does Barlaser brings to the team, for me, he was our worst player, Deing looked ok for me, comfortable with the ball & made a cracking save when their man was through one on one, he certainly couldnt do anything with their goal

As has been mentioned Rodgers is not a makeshift forward, but to play him upfront then Coburn & Akpom must have only made the bench to give everyone a lift, Carrick more or less said Howson was ahead fitness wise of both Coburn & Akpom to enable him to get minutes on the pitch & dear me, unfit with no pre season matches he was still head & shoulders above the bloke he replaced
McGree had his moments on the ball with no affect, but more often than not just ran down a blind alley, hopefully we dont see Crooks & Rogers together again, Carrick has Rogers for another role in the team, but not as a forward, Crooks should be a striker you bring on & when we have the numbers in at the end of the month, that will be his role, where Rogers fits in I have no idea

Hackney played well but tired midway through the 2nd, Fry & Lenihan were our better players

Sometimes Forss looks a decent player then like hes never seen a foktball before

Silvera played very well when coming on & had a great effortbon goal

Our winless start of the season goes on now, 9 years & counting, but TBH, if we played another month we wouldnt have scored

Next tuesday night v Huddersfield play Forss at CF, give Rogers a game in the middle, or outwide with holefully Coburn fit enough to start

We desperatly need at least 3 more signings, who must start games

I think the unerring Michael Carrick has to take his for share for this disjointed flop, with what looked like some kind of bizzare 2-2-6-0 formation to me. So I'll give all on-pitch participants a bit of grace on this occasion - with the exception of the totally hapless Barlaser. After all, he for one was playing in his natural position.

Looks to me like Carrick has invented an entirely new way of playing football, it's called 'Passing For The Sake Of It'.

Tiki-Taka is great when it has penetration or is at least threatening. Millwall just had to keep shape...Job Done.

Barlaser tries the '5-a-side' stuff but it's just not his game because he's too willing to offload and we lose possession. It was also a bit worrying when Duncan (one-leg) Watmore left him for dust in the 1st half.
Barlaser's more of a quarterback who needs a bit of time to play telling passes... and a lot of movement in front of him.

Rogers is playing the wrong role too. He needs balls to run on to. He can't twist, turn, hold-off and make space for snapshots like Archer can.

We had no width because what was the point of width? Any cross was gobbled up by the twin giants or sailed over everyone. And with no Chubaesque late arrival, no pull-back variation.

For me it's either get players to fit that system or change system. Jones can stretch out one side and we can block up the other like last year. We can tiki-taka it out to him or otherwise try going through the middle as an alternative.

Whatever happens that Archer replacement it the most pressing issue.

Sounds like a perfect addition for Carrick. According to QPR fans tho, he's not much better at shot stopping than Lumley was. However, for Arsenal to be sniffing around, he must have something. Hopefully he cracks on and becomes the next Schwarzer/Randolf/Steffan

I was expecting an avalanche of not good enough when I came back on here.

We weren't at the races today, the game against Auxxere was a marker of what to expect. Mcnair isn't a right back, we lacked in the middle, and up top, fuck me was abysmal. Also, this short corner shit that never once played out, yet they stuck with it, had you tearing your hair out. I noticed at the end, even Lenihan, screamed to them to knock it into the box. All too late.

If this isn't a warning to the club to get recognised players in I don't know what is. Three points pissed away at home, simply isn't good enough. The 1 nil defeat could have been 4 easily.

Title: Re: Atmosphere
Post by: Smoggers51 on August 06, 2023, 10:59:19 AM
The atmosphere was poor in my opinion because of the trepidation of what was to come after seeing the team line up and lack of striking ability. The weather and the shambolic roll out of the digital cards didn't help the atmosphere as well. When the Boro did try to attack I thought the atmosphere improved a little.I just think everyone was still carrying the playoff hangover onto this game and lack of pushing forward didn't exactly give us much to shout about.Give it a few more games before we start bemoaning the lack of atmosphere.
Title: Re: Atmosphere
Post by: Mike Peeler on August 06, 2023, 11:13:34 AM
Its common in most grounds now a shit/poor atmosphere - the wokies have killed it to some degree but its just the way its is in football now - no new songs and very few catch on apart from in the singing section of clubs.

Our away days are noisy and well played out in comparison to some. Take Millwall's songs sheet for example with the No one likes us a song they have pretty much naff all to sing home or away.

When a song does take off at Boro, the likes of OTR moan anyway and say it is on repeat all of the time. And then moan when the atmosphere is poor. The miserable moaning old bastards they are. You would think that MSF group's sole objective, along with other things every year is to raise the song list and atmosphere of the crowd, not just pat themselves on the back at the raising of a flag. I say that in the correct manner and not having a dig at the rainbow gang before anyone comments i am

Quote from: erimus74 on July 30, 2023, 08:18:46 PMSaturday 5th August, kick off 15:00 Hrs at the Riverside Stadium...
